Insider’s Secret: Il Macchione’s wines often beat Brunello di Montalcino (typically far more expensive!) regularly in blind tastings. This beauty was originally earmarked for Danny Meyer's restaurants until, well...you know, the global pandemic...their loss is your gain, all for nearly 50% OFF!

You are simply NOT drinking enough Montepulciano! At HALF the price of the showier big names of Brunello di Montalcino, these sangiovese-based wines from Montepulciano are equally as impressive and age-worthy. Montelpulciano is a beautiful medieval village perched on the top of a hill, first founded as a castle in the 8th century. The ever-important Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (sangiovese) is the ORIGINAL in the region, famous long before Brunello came into favor.

Brothers Simone and Leonardo Abram, natives of Trentino, purchased Il Macchione in 2007 and converted the entire estate to organic and biodynamic farming. At altitudes of about 350 meters in Montepulciano's fossil-rich, sandstone-strewn Caggiole Valley, the Abrams are fanatical in their vineyard management, capturing not just sangiovese's perfume, but its power. Today’s wine is all class with the grape’s signature cherry and floral notes followed by its intense and resounding structure on the finish. It’s a big, warm Tuscan hug of dark cherry, anise, clove, and raspberry, with hints of saddle leather and sandalwood. This is a stunning wine from start to finish, a staggering value, and a wine you will not regret owning A LOT of. For this price? Inconceivable!

About the Producer

Brothers Simone and Leonardo Abram, natives of Trentino, purchased Il Macchione in 2007 and converted the entire estate to biodynamic farming. At altitudes of about 350 meters in Montepulciano's fossil-rich, sandstone-strewn Caggiole Valley, the Abrams are fanatical in their vineyard management, capturing not just Sangiovese's perfume but its power. They make just two wines - this Vino Nobile, aged about 30 months total in a mix of cooperage (much longer than the law prescribes), and their Riserva, which ages in wood a good 40 months before bottling!

92 Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com -
Raspberries, blueberries and currants are the main scents of this young red. Medium body, soft ripe tannins and a nice, relaxed finish. Delicious now, why wait?
91 Wine Enthusiast -
Fragrant and refined, this medium-bodied red has aromas of iris, rose, ripe berry and sandalwood. It's elegant and already accessible, offering juicy Marasca cherry, licorice and ground clove. Polished tannins offer light support. Drink through 2023.
