Angles Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Calistoga Napa Valley 2022
Cabernet Sauvignon | US
This exquisite 94-point Cabernet was grown on the steep terraces of Napa’s acclaimed Jericho Canyon Vineyard. It has every right to be $150. Let’s do $39.95 instead.
Seamless blueberry jam and ripe blackberry are flecked with lavender, lilac, and vanilla bean. The pristine flavors are grounded by a lashing of walnut and flint – altogether long and delicious heading into a massively beautiful, showstopping finish. Fine tannins thunder down like a velvet curtain as the perfume of red roses fills the empty mouth, along with a whiff of cherry cola. 94 points indeed! Under $40 is almost shocking for this gorgeous 2022 Angles Reserve Cabernet – a true steal. But as Lena Dunham’s character Hannah said, “I like that kinda… like… light criminal activity.”
This singular, classy aesthetic could only come from a very special vineyard. Marla and Dale Bleecher planted Jericho Canyon in 1989 into the steep flanks of Mt. St. Helena in northern Napa Valley. The rocky outcroppings of the nearby Palisades add to the drama. It was an unconventional choice – and took extreme effort – to put in terraced plots of vines on land that’s too steep for tractors in some places. Even the Civil War veteran who received the property as payment for his service in the 1860s sensibly stuck to planting the original vineyard in a spot down near the creek.
The Bleechers have become a phenomenon with their Jericho Canyon winery and have sold fruit to the likes of Chateau Montelena, Ramey, and Rudd. Their son, Nicholas, who made this 2022 for the boutique Angles label, grew up on the property laboring in the vineyard. After getting a winemaking degree at UC Davis and work-traveling the wine world, he came home to take his place at Jericho Canyon alongside legendary consulting winemakers Michel Rolland (numerous 100-point scores) and Aaron Pott. Here you can taste what he’s learned.
We cannot believe we’re able to offer this to you at $39.95. Order three or more for the full 73% price drop.
About the Producer
Winemaker Nicholas Bleecher grew up among the vines of Calistoga – quite literally. His parents are the founders of the cult classic vineyard and winery Jericho Canyon, planted on the same ranch that was once home to Robert Louis Stevenson, where he stayed whilst writing the Silverado Squatters. Bleecher studied winemaking at UC Davis, then returned to Jericho Canyon to assist in all aspects of operations and work alongside consulting winemaker Aaron Pott, 2012 Food and Wine Winemaker of the Year, and the legendary Bordeaux-based blending consultant, Michel Rolland. He also finds time to work with Angles, which focuses on precise and creative expressions from Napa’s Calistoga AVA.
