Spellbinding. The Bell Mountain Special Select Cabernet is the pinnacle of the Medlock Ames’ portfolio. This is a cut above for a few reasons: the already-legendary 2023 growing season; the immense talent of highly acclaimed winemaker Jean Hoefliger (busy man!); and a respected organic vineyard on the back of Mount St. Helena. The flavors are handsome and concentrated, but most importantly, there’s a real quality of specialness – that poignance that makes great mountain Cab so moving. Expect a sleek, juicy core of dark bramble berries, balsamic richness, and evergreen forest. Decanter scored this 95 points: “...fantastically savory… expressive of its rich dark berry fruit character… real power and tension here…”

About the Producer

Medlock Ames Winery was formed in 1998 by two college best friends, Chris Medlock James, and Ames Moris. While in college, they had the idea of creating Bordeaux wines from California grapes. They then packed up their stuff and headed out to California and settled on a property in Bell Mountain. The vineyard combines steep hillsides with growing conditions similar to Bordeaux which was perfect for the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Bell Mountain Special Select is crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit on Bell Mountain in Alexander Valley. Aged for 20 months in 33% new French oak, it is a fantastically savoury red wine—full-bodied and expressive of its rich dark berry fruit character, woven into a fine tapestry of cedarwood spice. On the palate, the tannins are firm and powerful, offering excellent grippy texture. There is real power and tension here. From the exceptional 2023 vintage, the wine reveals increasing complexity with air: loamy earth, crushed fennel seed, dried rose petal, and garrigue emerge, culminating in a long, vivid, and mineral-driven finish.
