Conn Creek Cabernet Sauvignon AVA Series Oakville Napa Valley 2021
Cabernet Sauvignon | US
We have a serious deal on a serious bottle today. Conn Creek has been a trusted Cabernet producer since Napa’s 1970s renaissance, and this 2021 Oakville is exactly as classy as it should be. 94 points from Decanter, and $55 OFF each bottle – shipping included – when you order at least two. Oh là là!
It’s easy to lose your bearings in the elite Napa Cab world. Prices over $200 a bottle, dominatrix-like mailing lists. If you just want some high-scoring, impressive-tasting, traditionally made Cabernet from top terroir – without too much arms-race marketing jacking up the price – Conn Creek needs to be on your list. Particularly when Invino snags a stack of cases… we’re talking $70, instead of $125 from the winery, on a 94 pointer!
Oakville is one of Napa’s most prestigious subregions, holding court on the central valley floor and benchlands. Accordingly, this bottle comes from Conn Creek’s respected AVA Series. It was a much-lauded growing season, with a small crop due to drought, so there aren't a lot of 2021s floating around. Jonathan Cristaldi over at Decanter loved this wine, but recommended not opening it until 2025 or later, so we’ve been sitting on these cases for a while – which inadvertently gave our staffers time to plunder the stash. We’re now starting the offer with just 131 bottles available.
We love that it’s sleek and intense, yet expressive and juicy. Bonus points if you really meld it all together with extra swirling in the glass, or an hour in a decanter. Sandalwood, ripe cherries, soft strawberries, and fresh tangerine are driven home by powerful tannins and angular minerals. Cristaldi noted purple florals and sage, and wrote that “the character of the wine builds with tannic intensity balanced by a core of soft, juicy fruit.” So good! At 44% off retail, grab a Napa classic at a sharp price.
About the Producer
Conn Creek’s enduring commitment to Bordeaux-style, terroir-specific red wines began in 1973, when it was founded by Bill and Kathy Collins. The winery was among a small group leading a renaissance of the Napa Valley, and played an important part in establishing Napa’s reputation as a serious winegrowing region. Conn Creek was an early adopter of AVA-focused bottlings, which remain its specialty. Today, over 40 years after its founding, Conn Creek is still excelling at what Napa does best: Cabernet Sauvignon. Fun fact: Back in 1979, the Collins family built what is believed to be the first “green” winery building in Napa. It includes 12”-thick walls made of Styrofoam, steel mesh, gunite, and a total of 20,000 corks.
