Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon California 2022
Cabernet Sauvignon | US
This 2022 is Caymus’ second-ever vintage of their California Cab. We like that it’s a touch more spicy and herbaceous than other Caymus models, courtesy of white pepper and bay leaf notes. But don’t worry, that unapologetically indulgent style – big kiss of sweetness, ultra-plush texture – is all there.
The idea behind ‘California’ is to give fans a taste of less-traveled regions – Paso Robles, Lake County, San Benito County, and Monterey – at a much nicer price. Caymus’ standard Napa Cab is $72 at the winery, their Special Selection goes for $180, but this bottle is just $55 retail. And we can do even better: $37.95!
The nose is a seamless rush of blackberries, clove, and a double-shot latte. The palate is a bowl of boysenberries, black cherries, and blueberries all swimming in cream. Toasted marshmallow and milk chocolate take this right over the top. Ken’s Wine Guide gives it 91.5 points for being “lush and friendly” with moderate tannins that “linger and last for quite a while after the wine is gone.” This is begging to be opened with a plate of Kansas City-style barbecue ribs.
Now is a good time to remind you that you can include a gift note with your order – almost everyone knows someone who loves Napa’s master of bold consistency. Caymus is one of the most recognizable names in American wine, and still 100% owned and operated by the Wagner family. Now everyone can get their Caymus fix for just $37.95! Shipping is included on six or more.
About the Producer
In 1971, Charlie Wagner and his wife, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, asked their son Chuck – who had just graduated from high school – if he'd be interested in joining them to start a winery. If Chuck declined the offer, Charlie and Lorna would sell their ranch in Napa Valley and move to Australia. Both sides of the family came from a long line of grape growers and winemakers in Napa, with a farming tradition dating back to the 1850s. Chuck accepted his parents’ offer. They named the project Caymus Vineyards, after the Mexican land grant Rancho Caymus, which had been owned by George Yount and once encompassed their land. The Wagners produced their first vintage in 1972, consisting of 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Today Caymus is a beloved hallmark of consistency. Caymus remains 100% family-owned and operated.
