Cortada Alta is one of two estate vineyards for Mansfield-Dunne and the highest vineyard in the entire Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. These young vines are just hitting their prime, and this 94 point effort seems to be a glimpse of the greatness to come. 55% off and checking in at only $25.95 for a single vineyard pinot noir of this pedigree...that’s how we roll!

Mansfield-Dunne is a relatively new project, but with pinot master Ed Kurtzman at the helm, it is certainly not short on experience. With a resume that includes ROAR, Chalone, Freeman, Testarossa, August West, Fort Ross, and his own, Sandler Wines – he has compiled a roster of clients that would be the envy of any pinot specialist in California. The vineyard here was only planted in 2014 but with a selection of Calera, Pommard, Swan, and a handful of Dijon clones… there is an exceptional diversity of material available for the crafting of layered and nuanced wines.!!!

75% new French oak for a brief 10 months gives this a deeply spiced character profile that nevertheless maintains its verve and pure fruit freshness. Christmas spices galore, but also wild strawberries and raspberries, crisp red plums, licorice, orange peel, and tart pomegranate tea. A kiss of shaved chocolate and vanilla bean on the finish to make you blush, and a round and smooth finish that keeps you running back for more! This is California pinot noir through and through, yet one that doesn’t sacrifice friendliness for complexity, and with just enough structure to carry this into the next decade. 94 points! At our fantastic price, you need a lot of this!

94 Vinous -
Bright violet. Expansive aromas of black raspberry, cherry , licorice and potpourri, with smoky mineral and exotic spice notes in the background. Lush and appealingly sweet, displaying impressive depth, velvety texture and sappy red and dark berry, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors. Rounded tannins build slowly and meld effortlessly with the energetic fruit on an impressively persistent, floral-driven finish.
