We’ve said it before...Domaine de Poulvarel is one of the finest wineries for the price/quality ratio we have EVER found on our European exploits, and they just keep giving us gorgeous, powerful, beautifully-made classic reds. Officially considered part of the Rhone Valley since 1986 – these stellar wines rarely leave the country. One sip and you’ll understand why. Chalked full of fresh summer strawberries, dark, deep cherries laced with vanilla, forest floor, and roasted herbs de Provence – this blend of syrah and grenache is a beauty of a wine at a crazy affordable price!
Poulvarel has been officially organic since 2014, and we’ve watched these wines get better than ever. Their estate consists of the same galets roulés (round stones) you’d find in Chateauneuf du Pape – perfectly stressing the vines by allowing fast drainage, but helping to ripen the fruit through absorption of the day’s heat. This is one of our house staples, and you’ll want to make it yours too!
About the Producer
It is impossible to dissociate the Poulvarel Estate from Elisabeth and Pascal Glas. And for good reason, in 2004, while Pascal worked in wine estates for 25 years, they decided to create their own winery on family lands. What could seem like a crazy bet at that moment, is now a well-defended bet. The vintages of the estate are among the "award-winning" wines of the region and are "noticed" by the specialized press. Pascal passed on his passion for wine to Elisabeth and together they had the audacity to launch and the will to continue. They have united their strength, their differences, their know-how and now offer wines worthy of the best tables. On a filtering soil of pebbles Villafranchian Rhôdanien type mindélien, Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre give wines with strong expression of terroir and a unique character. In short, these wines are terrific values.
