A 50% syrah, 50% grenache from 50-year-old vines a stone’s throw over the river from Chateauneuf du Pape, this wine has so much of what we love in CdP’s wines – singing with pure strawberry ganache, kirsch, sweet herbs, and succulent, silky texture.
Invino clients may know the wonderful Cotes-du-Rhones and Chateauneuf-du-Papes we direct-import from Domaine Serguier (owned by the warm, funny, kind, and talented Daniel Nury and his wife, Aurélie) from their cellar, directly beneath the ancient town of Chateauneuf. Their holdings in Lirac, part of the Cotes du Rhone appellation, are about 10 miles north of Avignon. $18 for wines of this quality is rare for any region, but if you like big, bold, and smooth-sipping reds, then the force is definitely strong with this one!
About the Producer
Domaine Serguier emerged in the late 19th century under the direction of Hippolyte Serguier. Today Daniel Nury and his wife Aurélie represent the fourth generation of the winery. They manage things from their intimate tasting room in the center of Chateauneuf, which is connected to a small, hollowed out cave where the upcoming vintages are racked and vinified under Daniel's meticulous supervision.When Daniel took over in 1993 they were still providing fruit to Pierre Usseglio, and it wasn't until their contract ended that he started using fruit from their 7.2 hectares in Chateauneuf to produce their own wine. Most of the grapes are destemmed and then aged in a combination of mostly used French oak and around 30% new French oak.
