One of the finest red blends anywhere in the world! 96 POINTS...and only $35.95?! That’s an impressively great deal – and the mighty Penfolds’ has done it again. The Barossa Valley produces the lion’s share of Australia’s greatest wines, and Penfold’s has the pick of the lots that would make any estate jealous. We scored here – and now the chance is yours!

Penfolds is an iconic estate, brand, and wine producer – almost single-handedly proving that Australia can compete with any wine, from any region, and deserving to be in the fight for greatest wines in the world. Their exemplary “Grange” is year in and year out among the world’s best, and their Bin Series wines are legendary. This is the 30th anniversary of this cuvee – originally called “Old Vine Barossa Valley” until it was elevated to Penfold’s upper echelon with “Bin Status” in 1998. This homage to the Southern Rhone leads with grenache in the principal role, blended with 44% syrah and 6% mataro (aka, mourvedre,) to make one compelling beast of a wine!

The fantastic 2021 Barossa Valley harvest has made this perhaps the finest Bin 138 yet! A spicy, floral perfume reminiscent of a Tangier spice market gets things rolling, then joined by deeply heady notes of balsamic and Damascus plums. From there, expect elements of new leather, mocha powder, Luxardo cherries, fire-roasted meats, candied violets, and charred earth. It’s intense, but pretty, with an almost Northern Rhone-esque meatiness and savory edge. Gorgeous now, but with years to spare – this is unequivocally one of the best quality for value Rhone Blends you can find on the market today – from any region! We did our part and snagged all we could...now, it’s your turn!

Always a favourite and what is especially exciting is that, for me, this is the finest 138 yet made. Grenache (50%), Shiraz (44%) and Mataro (6%), it is entirely sourced from the Barossa Valley. A year maturing in a mix of French (10% new) and American (2% new) oak. The colour is a vibrant deep purple and there is an utterly gorgeous nose with depth and early complexity. Blackcurrants, black cherries, warm earth, mocha, new leather, violets and spices, this is taut, balanced, seamless and seductive. Arabica coffee bean notes emerge on the palate, along with a hint of a bitter almond character on the finish. Exemplary structure, very fine tannins and great length, this is a brilliant wine with fifteen to twenty years ahead. It may go even higher. A great 138.
94 James Halliday -
A Barossa Valley blend of 50/44/6% grenache/shiraz/mataro aged in French (10% new) and American (2% new) oak for 12 months. Purple splashed crimson in the glass and quite perfumed on the nose with notes of dark plum and berry fruits, pressed flowers, cola, souk-like spice, black tea and earth. It sports a savoury palate shape with characteristically plush fruit depth, tight, compact tannins and a medium-length finish packed with ripe plums and spices.
93 James Suckling -
A more compact and taut GSM than I recall in past years. Mid-weighted of feel despite the extract and alcohol, righteous for the blend at hand Christmas cake spice, damson and picked cherry. A slither of spicy freshness doused in clove, Asian five-spice, cardamon and white pepper, with a medicinal lilt of Chinotto rounding out the easy going finish. This is really rather delicious. Drink or hold.
