Gordenker Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain 2013
Cabernet Blends | US
This is a new project from a long-standing Sonoma farming family that goes back to the 1800s. Moon Mountain cabernet sauvignon, from the family estate in the glorious 2013 vintage made by Michele and Tom Gendall, 92+ points from Wine Advocate, all this and more...for NEARLY 70% OFF! Let’s do this!
The Gordenker family are long-time turkey farmers, who caught the wine bug and planted their Moon Mountain hillside to 13 acres of vines in 1998. After selling off the fruit for the first few harvests, they brought in Michele and Tom Gendall (Tom is the winemaker at the iconic Cline Vineyards) to keep some fruit and start the Gordenker label. 2013 is their second vintage, and wow, is it a doozy!
This is a structured, mountainous expression of Sonoma cabernet sauvignon from a Nun’s Canyon site that is often the very last vineyard picked in all of Sonoma. The nutrient-barren volcanic soils, and cool, high-elevation micro-climate, lend an extended hang-time for the fruit, so slow, even ripening perfectly balances ripe fruit flavors with structure-providing acidity and depth. The wine is bold and full, with aromas and flavors of black berries, boysenberries, and cherries, plus earthy spices, Herbs de Provence, and mineral notes of iron ore and graphite. The finish is bright, fresh, and structured, showing brilliantly now, at nine years since harvest. A Cali-cabernet, of this quality and complexity, for under $30 is a rarity, and this is certainly one to add to your list! Nearly 70% off?! It's almost too good to be true.
