C.V.N.E. Cune Rioja Reserva 2015
Other Reds | Spain
Setting the standard since 1879, this Reserva is simply gorgeous the moment it lands on your front porch -- smoky, plummy, dark cherries, and spiced with earthy-sweet oak notes and freshness that make it terrifically drinkable. Over the past 15 years, CVNE has gone from strength to strength, making the finest wines in its long history. A classic “food” wine, as well, we love it with something traditional like paella or just a great plate of charcuterie. Simply astounding at this price!
CVNE, an acronym for the winery, dates back to 1879 (!) but by mistake - the 'V' was written as a 'U' which led to the creation of the Cune label. C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España), or CUNE (pronounced COO-nay), has been considered one of the great bodegas not only of Rioja, but of the whole of Spain. Like other early bodegas, CUNE had French connections - to Champagne producers in Reims, as well as to the Cognac house Remy Martin.
The 2015 vintage in Rioja was "outstanding" according to Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media. A warm and dry growing season led to one of the earliest harvests on record, producing wines that are ripe and charming with incredible fruit concentration and structure. The 2015 Cune Rioja Reserva is exactly that, rich and dark but with well-judged acidity (a real accomplishment in 2015) that gives this length, structure and wonderful overall balance. It's hard to believe wine this good can be had for under $20! More reviews are below for reference but please note that we have just 20 cases available.
About the Producer
Since 1879, the C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España), or CUNE (pronounced COO-nay), has been considered one of the great bodegas not only of Rioja, but of the whole of Spain. Like other early bodegas, CUNE had French connections—to Champagne producers in Reims, as well as to the Cognac house Remy Martin.
While originally a negociant, the Real de Asúa brothers soon began acquiring vineyards, recognizing that controlling production from vine to bottle was the path to high quality. And they quickly demonstrated their success, winning numerous medals at the major European exhibitions taking place at that time.
