What you need to know: This is an explosively lavish blend of 35% Zinfandel, 31% Petite Sirah, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache, 9% Carignan and 5% Alicante. The flawless 2013 growing season generated powerful yet pretty wines with excellent ageability. The winemaker was Anthony Weytjens, the fruit was farmed with regenerative practices, and fermentation was native.

Galloni calls Edge Hill "one of Northern California's under the radar jewels” and he observes that the wines “are reliably outstanding, yet the winery seems to get very little attention.” It’s true – Edge Hill has always been more of an insider thing. It was founded in the western hills of St. Helena in 1867 by General Erasmus Keyes after his heroics in the Civil War, with a property deed signed by Abraham Lincoln himself. Over the decades, the land has gone in and out of production, and passed through the hands of some of Napa's more influential wine families – including the Martinis, Rudds, and Gotts.

It was Mr. Leslie Rudd who, in 2001, planted the field blend for Edge Hill’s flagship “Mixed Blacks,” to honor the inky grapes that would have been growing way back in Napa’s early days. The newest news is that the people behind Memento Mori just bought the beautiful property in 2026, and are planning a very culty reimagining with a new name.

Wine Spectator reports that the six acres of field blend will likely be removed and replanted with Cab – making the bottles our buyers scored even more precious.

About the Producer

Edge Hill Winery is one of Napa Valley’s oldest wineries, originally established in the 1860s with what is believed to be the region’s first gravity-flow facility. After decades of dormancy and transformation into a private estate, the property was painstakingly restored in the modern era, with a focus on honoring the historic “mixed blacks” field blend tradition. The wines have drawn consistent acclaim. Today, under new ownership and continued reinvestment, Edge Hill stands as a preservation project on the precipice of a new chapter.

Another intense wine, the 2013 Mixed Blacks Field Blend delivers serious intensity, with all of the complexity that these historic field blend vineyards deliver. The 2013 can be enjoyed today, but it will be even better in a another few years. Today, it is the wine’s sheer opulence that stands out above all else. A closing blast of plum, black cherry, French oak smoke and licorice leaves a lasting impression. The blend is 35% Zinfandel, 31% Petit Sirah, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache, 9% Carignan and 5% Alicante. The 85% new French oak is nicely integrated for such a young wine.
