Bird of Night made just 100 cases of this thrilling single-vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. And we got some! It’s like drinking the beauty of a fog-kissed, windswept hill. $19.95 is an absolute steal.
You don’t usually get this kind of mouthwatering complexity for under $20. Oh, the wild nuance and heart-warming succulence! It’s pure English Hill, a spectacular vineyard southwest of Sebastopol on that famous Goldridge sandy loam soil, fine as moon dust. The site is 9 miles in from the Pacific Ocean, and when you stand at the crown, you can see all the way down to the Marin Headlands – unless the fog is in. Bird of Night winemaker-owner Shane Keck (Martinelli Winery, Anthill Farms, Cobb, Hirsch) aims to “craft Burgundian-inspired wines that represent the area, climate and elements which surround the vineyards.” A somewhat common goal, but he achieves it with uncommon vividness in this 2021 Pinot Noir.
The wine is tawny red in color, light-to-medium bodied, and has a lovely 12.5 percent alcohol. The nose is full of intrigue, just like the winding brambly roads leading to the vineyard: coffee, wild strawberry, gaminess, expensive bubble bath, Abba Zabba candy (remember? peanut butter encased in stretchy white nougat?). The palate wraps those aromatics in poignant Sonoma Coast layers of dried cherry, tart-sweet cranberry, mushroom, new leather, and salty sea air. A pipe tobacco finish puts a bow on the open-weave flavors and titillating bright acid. It’s compelling and elegant enough for the $52 retail price, and downright exciting at $19.95.
Shane used 50% whole cluster inclusion, native yeast fermentation, and 15% new oak. His love of minimalist, site-driven winemaking was sparked during travels in Burgundy and South Africa. But his affinity for owls – hence the name Bird of Night – began the moment he saw one in a hay barn as a child in his native Russian River Valley. This is a sincere and sophisticated Pinot Noir that will steal your heart and make you proud to drink wine. Order at least six for the full 61% price drop.
