Frisson Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2022

SPECIAL: Ground shipping included on orders of 3 bottles or more!

This is one of our team’s favorite bottles of the past year or two. If opulent, silky, chocolatey, floral Cab speaks to you, and you like high scores and acclaimed winemakers… it should be an easy yes.

The name Frisson means "a sudden strong feeling of excitement," and this 2022 does it. Thick boysenberry puree and baked plums ooze into chocolate lava cake and sultry gardenia. A wash of Gravenstein apple meets a rush of fresh air. Flecks of black pepper and cinnamon evolve into hypnotic frankincense. Decanter awarded 94 points and noted "elongated tannins, creating both density and freshness." This is so smooth for a relatively young bottle – a high-end Cab that’s blessedly ready to drink right now.

And at this price, you don’t have to hoard it like Kashmiri saffron. We can't name the vineyard because of an NDA, but it's a prestigious site in Napa's Coombsville region – one of the AVA's founding vineyards, an important fruit source for culty producers like Realm and Modus Operandi. The winemaker is Kevin Morrissey, the first-ever American granted a cellar position at the iconic Château Pétrus, and a veteran of some of Napa's best: Ehlers Estate, Stags' Leap, and Étude. Kevin has an artist's touch – he actually went to the NYU film school and worked as a cameraman before pivoting to wine.

If you've been fuzzy on whether you can and should treat yourself to really great bottles, this should bring the good news into focus.

About the Producer

“Frisson” is a French word that describes a sudden moment of intense excitement – a thrill. This is the feeling retired Texas businessman Terry Davis was chasing when he founded Frisson. He aims to produce wines that exemplify the energy of the New World, honed with the sophistication of an Old World approach, with an extra sense of thrill. The project began in 2007, when he purchased three tons of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on Napa’s Diamond Mountain District. Under the guidance of winemaker Wayne Donaldson, Davis was surprised by both how challenging and fun winemaking was. Winemaker Paul Colantuoni came on board, and after a long tenure, he passed the baton to the illustrious winemaker Kevin Morrissey, who was at the helm from 2020 to 2024. Frisson now has Modesto-born winemaker Robert Smith heading the cellar; he was previously at Quixote working closely with the renowned Philippe Melka.

94 Decanter -
Frisson, founded by Terry Davis, now benefits from the expertise of Etude and Ehlers Estate alumnus Kevin Morrissey. This 2022 Napa Cabernet showcases Morrissey’s deft hand in the cellar, with fruit sourced from Coombsville that brings a dark-fruited, savoury-spiced nose, characteristic of the southern Napa AVA. Alluring aromas of ripe blackberry, toasted fennel, and fine cedar lift from the glass. A rush of juicy blackberry, blueberry, and spiced plum melds with ripe fig on the palate. A grippy acid backbone balances firm, elongated tannins, creating both density and freshness. This Napa Cab can carry a meal or be savoured later with a good cigar.
90 James Suckling -
The nose gives aromas of blood plums, dark chocolate and cedar. The palate is full-bodied with firmly integrated tannins and acidity plus notes of mulberries, coffee beans and dried herbs. Nicely balanced. Drink or hold.
