Three AVA blend of old vine vineyard sites; sometimes the sum of three parts is greater than a single site when it comes to winemaking. Lodi, Mendocino, and Paso Robles in the mix here making for a fantastic old school zinfandel from Jean Hoefliger. Brilliant red fruit, intense red cherry, bergamot, blood orange and spiced nutmeg. Long finish and a moderate abv at 14.8%

In the wine world of today, there is gobs of talk about single-vineyard, micro-produced releases. And, we’ve brought a vast selection of this boutique gems to Members over the last couple of years.
Meanwhile, we’ve not given enough credit to the workhorses of the wine universe—wines meant for drinking with total enjoyment and not a whiff of pretension or snobbery. Voila—one such wine is the 2015 Theory Zin, a 100% varietal Zinfandel made by Jean Hoefliger (who studied his remarkable craft under Michelle Roland, but that’s a legend for another day), culled from a trio of appellations, each one as hip and trendy as anyplace in the state. Because the grapey, gooey, juicy wonder was made from Zin grown in Lodi, Paso Robles, and Mendocino, the label must simply say ‘California.’ But, oh, what this state can do when it comes to boisterous, fruit-filled Zin. Yum! Enjoy this ‘drinker’ with burgers, pizza, pasta, takeout—or chill it slightly and enjoy as a bold, teeth-staining aperitif!
Four reasons we love it:
- Too early for the wine press to rate the 2015 vintage, but experts say the quality looks to be exceptional across most of California, while the quantity is light, due to the significant drought.
- Theory Zin is made by Jean Hoefliger, the winemaker at Alpha Omega and formerly of Newton Estate.
- This Zin was fermented in stainless steel and aged in barrel for 12 months (80% American and 20% French, 30% new)
- Zinfandel remains one of California’s most popular grape varieties and is now grown in 10% of the state’s vineyards.
Dark ruby color with bold aromas of blackberry, plum and clove. The entry is rich and full, with juicy acidity encircled in flavors of chocolate, cherry and vanilla extract. Voluptuous and persistent finish with smooth tannins.
About Jean Hoefliger..
Jean Hoefliger believes in reinventing the wheel. This passionate Swiss talent who has doubled as Alpha Omega’s winemaker and general manager since the winery’s inception in 2006, thrives on pushing the winemaking envelope. One of Napa Valley’s brightest winemaking stars, Jean reached that distinction by never being static and always doubting himself.
Those two distinguishable characteristics enable him to constantly push forward and progress with each vintage. Zealous about his craft, Jean has mastered not just the art of blending but also possesses an uncanny knack to visualize a grape’s destiny while the berry is still on the vine.
