I'm Keen to Send You to Spain.
I still remember the wine that made me realize I truly love wine. It was a Spanish red, mostly Tempranillo of course, at Le Chat Noir in Barcelona (famous as one of Picasso's hangouts) while studying abroad in college. I ordered a random red from the menu and BAM! it all made sense to me. This delicious Rioja brings me right back to Barce.
Tobacco and tart raspberry aromas. Clay-like texture with grippy tannins, balanced out by juicy acidity. Savory plum, figs, black raspberry, fresh tobacco and cinnamon. This is all complemented by a fruity, earthen finish. Spanish wine in my mind means a fun time. This is great to share with friends. -92 Points - JZ December '17
"Thanks to its distinctly old-school style, this wine would be great with a strongly seasoned braised lamb dish."- Vinous
"Fresh cherry and plum aromas are a bit scratchy but alert. This feels firm, with bright acidity creating a raw sense on the palate. Plum, berry and a pinch of saltiness make for an authentic flavor profile, while this finishes long and steady. Drink through 2018."- Wine Enthusiast
90% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo
Rioja DOCa, Spain
This is a 'WOW' production from vineyards flourishing for over a half century. Distinctive and just as delicious, yet unlike big-production, commercially made Crianza, this one comes from 100% hand-harvested fruit (90% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo). Following a long, slow (aka, absolutely traditional) fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels. For those who love classic, not necessarily trendy Spanish reds designed for the table and for the sort of long, slow dinners that--in our opinion—never go out of fashion.
Four reasons we love it:
- Vina Otano is a family-owned winery, whose start goes back to 1910 when "Grandfather Don Román Montaña" first immersed himself in grape growing and winemaking.
- The winery is located in Fuenmayor, La Rioja, in the sub-zone of Rioja Alta, a town famous for high-quality fruit and for wines that age longer than pretty much any other on the planet!
- Otano makes use of mechanical weeding rather than potentially harmful chemicals and applies only organic fertilizer from composted grape pomace.
- According to laws governing the production of Rioja, a Crianza must be aged for one year in casks before being the bottle and an additional year of age on top of that. They are typically released two years post-harvest while maintaining plenty of structure and food-friendly acidity.
Deep red. Smoke-tinged aromas of dried cherry, pipe tobacco, mocha and olive, along with hints of vanilla and game. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering sweet cherry-vanilla, floral pastille and licorice flavors that tighten up steadily on the back half. Finishes with building sweetness, a repeating suggestion of game and smooth, subtle tannins.
