REVIEWS

"The 2005 Rento is 100% Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo) that went through malolactic in new barrels and was aged for 18 months in new French barriques. Fragrant aromas of sandalwood, exotic spices, lilacs, mineral, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry inform the nose of a dense, rich, opulent, structured wine that will benefit from another 5-6 years of cellaring. It is a fine example of the outstanding 2005 vintage in Ribera del Duero that will offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2030." -Wine Advocate

The 2005 release from Rento is just now entering the recommended drinking window, and it’s showing wonderfully.  The wine is ripe and lush, with notes of plum, black cherry and vanilla, showing secondary notes of dried cedar, pipe tobacco, baking spice and hints of dark chocolate on the finish.  Expect a big and bold red with well balanced acidity, firm structure and sweet tannin that lingers for at least a minute.  Enjoy now through 2026 - DZ Apr 2016

94 points from the Wine Advocate, which notes: “a fine example of the outstanding 2005 vintage in Ribera del Duero that will offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2030.”

“Fragrant aromas of sandalwood, exotic spices, lilacs, mineral, espresso, black cherry and blackberry inform the nose of a dense, rich, opulent, structured wine…” writes the WA.

While this delightful, bold red is now finally at the opening of this drinking window, we doubt anyone will be able to hold off till 2030 for this wine’s gradual and elegant denouement. At this stage the wine is eerily approaching perfection with primary black fruit notes emboldened by secondary characters of sweet vanilla and exotic spice and even tertiary elements of walnut, chocolate-covered coffee bean and woodsy, savory forest floor.

Sourcing its Tempranillo from 25-year-old vines grown only the high-altitude zone of Pago de las Solanas—one of Ribera’s most prized subregions--accounts for a measure of this red’s brilliance. Aging in new and neutral (50/50) French oak for 18 months and a further protracted period of maturation in the bottle before release ensures a softening of Tempranillo’s naturally massive grip. Free Shipping on 4+ bottles is just one more incentive to this outstanding, collectible offering.

Reasons why we love it:

The unquestionably successful 2005 vintage scored 95 points from the Wine Spectator, which notes: “Assertive wines with chewy tannins; the best have great depth,” 94 points from the Wine Enthusiast and 93 points in the Wine Advocate.

This bodega was founded in 2000, but don’t think for a minute Rento is some sort of new-fangled, ultra-modern endeavor. The winery is housed in a 16th century manor house with an outbuilding used for aging the barrels that features stone walls as much as 2 meters thick, providing perfect temps for maturation. Additionally, the winery has no pumps, centrifuges or motors, and all techniques are done 100% by hand.

Ribera del Duero is an old-time, established appellation in Spain that is recently incredibly hot. Ribera got the title of “Wine Region of the Year” recently in the Wine Enthusiast. For those who love Napa Cab but are ready to try something different, with all of the boldness and grip of the Napa Valley, Ribera is the ideal next step in a journey into European wine regions.

TASTING NOTES

The power of the 2005 vintage is on full display: this wine has fig, date, and raisin in its super-ripe nose, and the mouth expresses the same intensity. This is not for the fans of elegant Ribera del Duero, but it will win over plenty of New World and even Priorat tasters as well. Drink in the next several years.

THE STORY TO KNOW

The Renacimiento winery is located in a sixteenth-century mansion built by the Marquis de Olivares and located in the town of the same name in the province of Valladolid. The winery renovated a building with a 100-barrel capacity brick vault with six-feet-thick walls that provides optimal natural conditions for aging the wines. The winery use no pumps, centrifuges, or mechanized devices; all processes are carried out by hand to ensure the greatest care for both the grapes and the wine and to create a product with exceptional sensory qualities. - See more at: http://www.winesfromspainusa.com/wine/rento#sthash.2BNyAHSg.dpuf
