Made by Sean Boyd and from 100% Syrah (from the estate vineyard in the Rocks Region of Walla Walla) brought up in 18% new French oak, the 2015 Proper Estate is another inky colored Syrah from this vintage that has a terrific bouquet of black currant, olive tapenade, lavender and pepper. It's rich, full-bodied, opulent, and sexy on the palate, with a sweet, expansive texture, no hard edges, and a rocking finish. Count me in as a fan, it's going to keep for 7-8 years. ~JD

Coming from the Rocks District, this offers expressive aromas of potpourri, fresh chopped parsley, orange peel, green olive, smoked meat, fresh flower and wet stone. These lead to plush, palate-coating fruit and savory flavors. Olive and charcuterie notes linger on the finish. ~SEAN P. SULLIVAN, Wine Enthusiast, 4/1/2018

Always love the Syrah from this estate and the 2014 Syrah is no exception. Blackberries, plums, olive, pepper and damp earth notes all give way to a ripe, voluptuous, supple and polished beauty that's already hard to resist. It lacks a touch of the mid-palate found in previous vintages, but just shines for its charm and character. Drink it over the coming 5-7 years. ~Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, (2014 proper vintage)

"When something is “done proper” it’s done in the same style of its origin – it pays homage to its roots without cutting corners." ~Conor, David H., Kevin, Billy and David K. of Proper Wines

Proper’s 2015 offering is distinctly from the winery’s estate Rocks District terroir, yet is a unique expression of what was an unusual but exciting growing season.

Vintage: "In short, 2015 is another terrific vintage for Washington State that has yielded ripe, yet also pure and focused wines that will benefit from short-term cellaring." ~Jeb Dunnuck

What of the other major center for American syrah production, Washington State? Over the years, Washington growers have continued to invest in the grape. By 2015, about 16,000 tons of syrah grapes were produced, according to the Washington State Wine Commission, up from about 10,000 tons in 2011. At the same time, good Washington producers have been making an effort to seek out the best terroirs for their grapes.

A heartier, richer syrah that is young, fresh and intense!

This one is very complex and could benefit from another year or two in the bottle before consuming. It's smokey, gunpowder even, bold, meaty and earthy all at the same time. The tannins are fine, and the alcohol is higher than any coastal syrah. The 2015 Proper is hot and heavy. I really like the savoriness and the balance of fine tannins and weight while having enough fruit to keep the savoriness from over powering the palate. Reminds me of a really good Châteauneuf-du-Pape with more fruit and strength. Wait a year or two, decant for 1-2 hours if consumed now and drink for another 8-10 years! Solid 94 points as it has the fruit and the savoriness that allow it to be versatile in the world of Syrah and Walla Walla, some cab lovers will dig it also.

Upon first impression the 2015 is brighter, with slightly more tannin and acidity as compared to previous vintages. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and luscious, and is full of dark fruit, cherry, plum and wet stone minerality. A dark finish offers swirling notes of semisweet chocolate, espresso, smoke and charred meat.

Proper Winery has been a passion project nearly ten years in the making. In 2005 Conor McCluskey and David Houle partnered together with the vision of using their gifts and opportunities to pursue niche business ventures while building relationships and creating memories along the way. Multiple ideas were developed and vetted over the course of a year, but rising to the top was the opportunity to purchase a small parcel of premium vineyard land (a cherry orchard at the time) in the Walla Walla wine appellation of Southeast Washington. The cherries were replaced with Syrah vines in the Spring of 2007, and the journey began…

Several years later they would be joined by close friends Kevin Dibble, Billy Adams and David Kunstle. In 2011, the Proper Wines brand was born with the release of its first vintage of small batch production Syrah and Rose’.

A quintessential pairing with cheese and charcuterie but why not take it to the next level?! As rich, bold and smokey as this wine is it will need some muscle, something wood grilled or smoked like brisket, beer can chicken or some dry rubbed steaks and beef ribs. Grilled portabellos and bell peppers would pair nicely also. ~Chef James
