Next to Sancerre, My Favorite Sauv Blancs are the New Zealanders.
They just have a certain refreshing quality about them that keeps me coming back for more. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Sacred Hill's version is an easy sipper that got me nodding my head right off the bat. Exactly what I look for in a wine like this.
Crisp lemon zest & kiwi aromas float up from the glass. On the palate, tart citrus acidity and sea salt minerality complemented by notes of pineapple and lime. It leads into a refreshing medium finish. Too good to pass up.

Perfumed with guava, gooseberry, and mango, Sacred Hill’s 2014 SB is as thirst-quenching as wine gets but without skipping a beat in sophistication or flavor.
“Vibrant and zingy, a lime-soaked mix of pineapple and grapefruit flavors, with a peppery white-flower accent,” writes the Wine Spectator. Our Tasting Panel was delighted with this wine’s minerality—a quality sometimes lacking in Sauvignon Blancs priced as modestly as this one. Could be, the wine’s delicacy and verve were thanks to 100% night harvesting of grapes and immediate cool-fermentation in the tank or to the absolute minimal handling of the fruit and young wine throughout the winemaking process. Surely these steps helped Sacred Hill to produce one of the most pleasing SBs we’ve tasted from the Southern Hemisphere is a long stretch. No wonder this producer remains the holy grail for Kiwi vini.

- The 2014 vintage in New Zealand received 91 points from the Wine Spectator. Jancis Robinson notes: “A generally good vintage across the country…”
- Established winemaker Tony Bish has made more than 32 vintages of crowd-pleasing, award-winning wines. Good thing for all of us his first career choice—professional surfer—didn’t exactly pan out!
- This estate commands excellent single vineyard sources in Hawkes Bay as well as the better-known Marlborough appellation. The winery itself sits in the shadow of mount Puketapu, or “Sacred Hill” in the local Māori language.
- Sacred Hill is a long-standing member of Sustainable Winegrowing NZ initiatives and was one of New Zealand’s first estates to be audited and accredited by the program. The estate is also a member of the New Zealand Packaging Accord, which is an organization of businesses driven to reduce environmental waste and excess packaging.
Pale straw appearance. A lifted rich aroma with tropical fruit notes of fig, guava, gooseberry, and passionfruit complemented by citrus zest florals and fresh mown grass.
Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food.
