90% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Franc
Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany, Italy
Wine Spectator's "hero" of the Tuscan vintage, Sangiovese was the hands-down winner in 2013. Knowing this, we had to admit: we had some relatively big expectations when the winery poured it for us earlier this year. As always, Rignana delivered, and then some!
Consistently regarded a fantastic Riserva tier production, this new release has yet to be rated by the Press, but we suspect it will receive great props like those before it. Showing juicy with polished tannins, it's got that velvety finish, every wine geek looks for.
By law, Chianti Riserva must be aged a minimum of two years in wood. This one rested for 24 months in large “Barrique di rovere.” Chianti Classico Riserva must contain a large proportion of Sangiovese (75% to 100%). Rignana’s version is made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Franc—a somewhat unusual cépage. Cab Franc is rarely used in Chianti, but our Tasting Team deeply appreciated its unmistakably minty presence in this supple, forward red. An outpouring of berry/cherry fruit, peppercorn and black licorice frame the palate of this still youthful Chianti Riserva. Drink this down over the next couple years with pork chops or anything at all in your house red sauce.
Reasons we love it:
Produced exclusively from only Rignana-grown grapes from vineyards in Panzano in Chianti, a picturesque wine town halfway between Sienna and Florence.
Owner-Winemaker Cosimo Gericke uses sustainable methods in the vineyard and cellar, and as of the 2013 vintage all of Rignana’s wines are 100% organic.
The Chianti Classico DOCG is a specialized terroir noted for its alberese- and galestro-rich soils. The ground here is distinctly stonier than in the rest of the larger Chianti zone, which results in more concentrated wines with increased grip, tannin and depth.
Deep red color, red fruit and spicy aromas, soft and persistent taste. Aromas of dark-skinned berry, rose and wild herb lead the nose. The round, juicy palate doles out ripe black cherry, fleshy raspberry, white pepper and clove while polished tannins provide a smooth, velvety framework. Enjoy through 2022
From the winery:
The wines of Rignana are produced exclusively with our own grapes: Sangiovese being predominant in percentage, followed by Canaiolo, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The respect to the Chianti region traditions is our main objective, this pushed us to convert into biological production. We are sure to add value to the Panzano territory with the typicalness of our Chianti Classico and Riserva, together with the production of a great IGT and Rosè, last but not least a highly appreciated Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
From the winery:
Particularly suited to game and cheese.
