Toscana Rosso Is, As They Say, Bellissima. I have a special connection to Italian wines that drink well and are priced with value. The Verruzzo di Monteverro is a prime example of the quality and style that I actively seek. Lush berry aromas with a hint of leather are indicators of the Sangiovese. On the palate, a full body shows cassis, black cherry and bramblebush, complemented by well-structured tannins and a medium finish. This can be drunk now or can even lay down 1-2 years. I'm pairing this with my weekend pizza. 92 Points - JZ November '17

Bright and inviting like the Tuscan sun, this agile red offers all the beauty of Bordeaux with vibrant Italian style. Super Tuscans have gotten a lot of praise recently, and we don’t love the accompanying jump in the price tag. For what Veruzzo di Monteverro’s Toscana offers, it’s a table staple that you’ll enjoy more and more as the night wanders on.
Why we love it:
- In the late 1990s, George Weber’s life and career took a hard left turn straight into the vineyard. A sip of 1er Cru Classé Bordeaux lured him away from business management and into winemaking. He happened across a plot of heaven in the seaside region of Maremma in 2003 and produced their first vintage in 2011.
- What caught Weber’s eye about this plot in Maremma? Aside from the shining Tuscan sun and stones-throw distance from the glorious shore, much of what seduced George and his wife Julia to plant their roots here was the freedom. Tuscany offers classic terroir perfect for silky Bordeaux style reds with the liberty to blend and make true Super Tuscans.
- The glimmer in the cape of this Super Tuscan is an Italian native that isn’t often seen in Maremma: Sangiovese. The bright and lively local grape elevates the seamless Bordeaux blend into another realm of delicious. Harmonious, seamless, and complex…this glass has all the guile and guise of Mona Lisa’s smile.
The color of this wine is deep dark cherry with purple on the rim. Beautiful explosion of fresh fruits like cherry and cassis with some hints of underbrush and fresh mint on the nose. The palate is round entrance evolving on a framed mouthfeel with tomato stems and cassis finishing with a fresh acidity.
From the winery...
In southern Tuscany, at the foot of the picturesque village of Capalbio, lies Monteverro. This is a region renowned for its authenticity and tradition and is characterized by its proximity to the sea, a love of life and a passion for art, as well as by hard agricultural toil.
Monteverro is the fruit of our passion. The idea of running a high-end winery in Tuscany stems from our unbridled enthusiasm for outstanding wine. The love of the Maremma region and our desire to achieve the utmost every day are our inspiration. The result is some of the best and most exceptional wines in the world. This is not only thanks to our great exposure, our amazing slopes, the sea breeze and the red clay soil with large rocks but of course to the people that make Monteverro so unique. It is the pure joy to be found in making magnificent wine that obliges us to take exceptional care and attention in picking and pressing only the very best grapes.
We regard our wine as a total work of art – one sees it, smells it and tastes it. And of this, each and every one of us is proud.
This wine pairs well with pecorino cheese, ham, roasts, game, grilled meat, beans, and soups.
