Wow-weee, an über delicious, long-time classic Châteauneuf du Pape from Domaine de la Janasse, one of the true stars of the region (and a highly accoladed producer to boot). Robert Parker says they are "one of the great winemaking estates of not only France, but of the world." High praise indeed! These guys know how to craft a beautiful wine with a "Burgundian" style weight resulting in a complex Grenache that's soft, light and lovely. It's like a dance–a beautiful, relaxing, stunning composition that floats across the palate with a most encore worthy finish.

Janasse is a family-run operation with Aimé, the founder, at the helm and his children, Christophe and Isabelle, overseeing day-to-day cellar, winemaking and vineyard operations. With scattered plots and varying soils (the result from having roots in geographically different locations) they create wines with an array of aromas and flavors. The Chaupin, which is sourced from a cooler site within CdP and rooted in their highly prized sandy soils, is a complex wine packed with notes of warm berry compote, lavender perfume, crushed rose petals and pie crust along with sweet herbs like tarragon, spearmint and warm spices like star anise and cinnamon. It's just so dang pretty, it has certainly earned a few slots in the wine fridge.

Super limited quantity and did we mention it's only $45?

TASTING NOTES

THE STORY TO KNOW

The estate was founded in 1976 by Aimé Sabon, the father of Christophe and Isabelle, who still oversees the vineyards. The property consists of 40 hectares, spread over as many as 70 different parcels throughout the appellation. While Aimé works in the vineyards, his children, Christophe and Isabelle, are in charge of wine production. Christophe is a self-proclaimed “great defender of Grenache,” which still represents 75% of their vines. With assistance from Aimé and Isabelle, he manages the common rusticity of Grenache-based wines through meticulous work in the vineyards and cellar. The result is a wide range of rich and flavorful Châteauneuf-du-Papes, Cotes-du-Rhônes and Vins de Pays that are complex and balanced – often in contradiction to a region better known for sheer exuberance and power.
