"The 2012 Vizcarra Senda del Oro Roble (100% Tempranillo) was aged six months in French and American oak. Youthful, grapey and still slightly unformed, it tastes more like a barrel sample than a finished wine. Its dense ruby/purple color and big blast of black currant and blackberry fruit, licorice, vanillin and graphite are both impressive. "Inky ruby. Ripe raspberry and cherry on the pungent nose, with a hint of vanilla emerging with aeration. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering a seamless texture to its nicely concentrated red fruit flavors. Finishes supple and long, with very good clarity, harmonious tannins and repeating sweetness. This wine was aged in a combination of two-year-old French and American oak for six months." -Vinous

90 points from Tanzer, Robert Parker and Vinous! “Its dense ruby/purple color and big blast of black currant and blackberry fruit, licorice, vanillin and graphite are both impressive,” says Parker. This offering is a spectacular value from one of Spain’s top appellations. Tastes like a serious, collectible European red but priced like an everyday quaffer!

A portion of Vizcarra’s highest-end, single vineyard Riberas is set aside and added to the Senda del Oro Roble for a boost of complexity and concentration. This 2012 includes a bit of Celia (which retails for $145 a bottle) as well as Ines (which goes for upwards of $155!). No new oak is used in the making of this beauty, so that the bright red fruit and inherent spiciness that defines top-class Ribera del Duero remains unadulterated. Full of bright raspberry and cherry fruit, the finish is velvety smooth and deliciously supple. This strapping, fruit-forward 100% Tempranillo is also made from 100% organically grown fruit.


Reasons why we love it:

Carefully produced in every way, the movement and transfer of all the must and the young wine in the winery takes place via gravity. This process helps to minimize the impact and maintain a clean, pure fruit presence in the final wine.

While this is Bodegas Vizcarra’s entry-level red, no expense is spared in the making of this wine, and the source fruit is as spectacular as any found in the Ribera del Duero. The organically grown vines that went into this 2012 were planted between 1950 and 1998 and are situated on limestone and sandy terroir at 2,785 feet above sea level.

From the 2009 to the 2014 vintage (and all years in between!), the Senda del Oro Roble has received 90+ scores from Vinous, Tanzer as well as Robert Parker.

TASTING NOTES 

An elegant wine from Ribera del Duero. Made by gravity, it exhibits purity and balance. This is a low production wine: only 3,000 cases are made for the world. Juan Carlos Vizcarra is one of the pioneers of "garage winemaking" in Ribera. All grapes are organically grown.

THE STORY TO KNOW

Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos was founded by Juan Carlos Vizcarra in 1991. They own 64 acres (26 hectares) of vineyards in the town of Mambrilla and Roa in Burgos.
