I Quickly Became a Fan of Ty Caton
Almost immediately after trying his wines. He has a full lineup of single-vineyard Cabs and delicious red blends. As such, I was keen to pick up this release, his Ty's Red, all sourced from his Caton Estate vineyard. Full and round, this is one that is well worth the time.
The nose gives an aroma of creamy brambleberry. Bright fruits on a full-bodied palate, with blueberry, raspberry, plum and coffee, smooth tannins on a creamy texture. It has a nice berry & tobacco finish. Single vineyard red blend? Yea, I'm in every time. 94 Points - JZ May '18
"Syrah comprises 55% of this blend, followed by 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot. Smoky oak encases compressed, meaty blackberry and big notions of tannin and oak. The finish flirts with overripe heat." -Wine Enthusiast

Location is everything. True when it comes to real estate and even more so when it comes to wine. The difference of a few acres can translate into a completely different soil make up, sun exposure, altitude, etc. A stroll through the Caton Estate Vineyard is all it takes to understand location in exacting specificity, and a taste of this wine is an apt and super pleasurable lesson in location as it applies to wine.
· The newly released 2015 Sonoma County Cab vintage was rated 93 points or “Excellent” by the Wine Enthusiast.
· Ty Caton is a local boy—raised in the town of Sonoma. In 1997, Caton convinced his parents to partner with him in planting vines on the family’s 108-acre property in what is now the Moon Mountain District AVA. A wine estate was born!
· While the family owns the entire 108-acre swath of prime land, just 40 acres are under vine as Caton concentrated plantings on the steeply contoured hillsides only and insisted that the majority of the land and the flora and fauna living there remained undisturbed.
· Today, Ty Caton produces a total of 11 unique, small-production Cabernets—each one just 3 to 8 barrels worth of wine—along with limited releases of Merlot and red blends.
This unique red blend comes from 55% Syrah, 36% Cabernet, 6% Petite Verdot and 3% Merlot all from the Caton Vineyard, with each varietal planted at the ideal altitude and on the best terroir for its distinctive needs. Few winemakers have such a diverse palate as Ty Caton. Lucky for us, he makes the most of it in this velvety and full-bodied red. Tongue coating flavors of blackberry and black cherry lead to a finish of warming cedar and a touch of vanilla. Drink this with red meat or by itself.
This delicious blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Merlot provides juicy flavors of blackberry, cocoa, plum, and black cherry.
From the winery:
Ty Caton Vineyards was established with his first release, the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Caton Vineyard is rich with an interesting history having been the site of a winery and vineyards that was founded in the 1920’s and ran consistently through prohibition and into the 1940’s. The original winery, crush-pad, and main home still stand today and are paid tribute to on our Caton Cabernet Collection labels.
In the 60’s, the land was owned by The Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco and ran as a summer camp. The Ballfield Syrah and The Barracks Cabernet Sauvignon honor this history in their names. In 1997, Ty began developing the vineyard, and the Caton Vineyard as we know it today was founded. Ty has been farming the vineyard ever since.
Luckily, this wine is not only delicious by itself, but also very food friendly! Uncork it next to a juicy burger, riblets covered in sauce, or even your favorite pork dish.
