Gorgeous wines from a very special place. The 2015 "Bank of the Orange Trees" is a lovely example of how amazing this hillside river bank vineayrds are. The mencia grape shines with red fruits and lots of herbs with load of spices. It has medium body with perfectly balanced acidity making it a food lovers companion as well as a great spring & summer red. Mencía is a Spanish grape variety primarily found in the northwestern part of the country. It is planted on over 9,100 hectares (22,000 acres), and it is primarily found in the Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras regions.
Most wines produced from Mencía have traditionally been light, pale, relatively fragrant red wines for early consumption. This style of wine was the result of post-Phylloxera plantations on fertile plains, which tended to give high yields but diluted wine. In recent years, much more concentrated and complex wines have been produced by a new generation of winemakers, primarily from old vines growing on hillsides, often on schist soils, in combination with careful vineyard management. This has led to a renewed interest in Mencía and the Denominaciones de Origen using it, such as Bierzo, Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra and the little-known Liébana.
Since the 1990s, the grape is increasing in popularity, and an increasing number of noted Spanish winemakers are now working with it.
This vineyard site is situated 200 meters above sea level in the lower part of the hill closest to the river banks of the Miño where orange trees thrive. The clusters pass through the selection table and the grapes are introduced with a percentage of stem. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 6500 liter oak foudres and additionally aged for 6 months in French oak. Fermentation with native yeasts.
Ruby red color. Complex in aromas of compote red fruits and floral features. Silky and sweet at the entrance, with balsamic notes and very integrated tannins, good acidity. Great persistence at the end.
Try this with traditional Galician foods such as Empanadas or Lacón con grelos (shoulder of pork with turnip tops).
