This 2011 Sergio Zenato Riserva is everything you want in a dark and decadent KING of Italy! It's intensely gorgeous and rich, it's dark crimson hue meets a black opulent center loaded with complex nuances of fig cake for sure, dark black roasted fruits, dark-chocolate-caramel, vanilla, dried herbs and tobacco with meaty, fleshy tannins that coat the mouth. This is history and legacy that has been awarded top honors from some of Italy's top scorers. This kind of wine is a holiday table celebration wine that will age for two decades, easily. This is why I love Amarone and is the top gift wine in my eyes, a show stopper and a centerpiece. Drink now, but decant, or hold for another 10-12 years. Solid 95 points as the key to all things heavenly is that one word: BALANCE!

Today his family carries on the tradition and passion that put Zenato on the map. This one deserves 100% of your attention as one of the "Godfathers" or "Kings" from the Valpolicella DOCG!  

Amarone Riserva “Sergio Zenato” is produced only in excellent vintages, from a selection of grapes Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta, and Croatina coming from the oldest vineyards in Costalunga estate in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella. The particular low yields have led to a wine of great concentration, with aroma of vanilla and fruits, an intense and long lasting taste. The grapes come from a truly special hillside vineyard, check out the video below. 

Production: The grapes are left to raisin dry for 3-4 months in small trays (only one layer), well-spaced out to allow good air circulation. The wine pressing takes place in January through de-stemmer and pre-maceration of the skins on the must. Skin contact fermentation lasted 15-20 days, then the wine has been aged in 75 hl. Slavonian oak barrels for 48 months. Follows conditioning in bottle for 1 year before being released.

This Amarone Riserva comes, as is expected, in a pretty dark and deep red color, black to the core looking concentrated, and dark red to the rim. 

Loads of intense prune notes join forces with sweet spices such as clove and nutmeg, somewhat like ginger bread but further backed up by black pepper and licorice for such a powerful scented dark-caramel-like profile.


The heart and soul of Zenato lies in the ancient morainic lands of Lugana and Valpolicella, with their mild climate and unrivalled charm, that overlook the Veneto shore of Lake Garda.

The vineyards cover 75 hectares in the Zenato estate of S. Cristina in San Benedetto di Lugana, ideal for the Trebbiano di Lugana, and in the Costalunga estate in Valpolicella, the homeland of the famous Amarone Zenato, where the renowned vines Corvina, Rondinella and Oseleta are cultivated.

It all began in 1960 when Sergio Zenato, filled with energy and ambition and driven by his deep bond with the territory, tried out new techniques of wine making and invested in native vines in order to obtain wine of the highest quality.
Today, his wife Carla, together with their children Alberto and Nadia, continues to pursue Sergio’s great enterprise with the same enthusiasm, tenacity and infinite dedication, making the excellence of Zenato's wines known in more than 60 countries of the world.

In this way, the soul of Lugana and the heart of Valpolicella continue to expand their borders.
