Sonoma Coast Rings "Prosperity" in My Ears
Ok, enough punning around. Pinot Noir, as many know, does best in cool climates with some kind of fog or coastal influence. It's exactly the reason why we get so many amazing wines out of the Sonoma Coast region. Prosper's Pinot Noir is an example of what the grape can do when allowed to get beyond the typical light body. I wouldn't call it full and voluptuous, but rather a Pinot with a bit of umph.
Strawberry and coconut husk on the nose. Medium bodied with toasty oak tannin, fresh-picked boysenberry and tart red currant. The finish is long and mellow, leaving a pleasant, lingering berry flavor. This is a beachside sipper, perfect for that weekend at the lake or on the coast. Wine geeks know there's a vast array of style variation in Pinot Noir. But even with that universal view, our Sourcing Team was taken aback by this particular and exciting production: one that seems to have been made with big Napa CAB fans in mind. Coming out of the critics' 94 point vintage and an uber small lot of prime vineyard fruit, it shows great color, plush fruit and rich texture coming together as anything but predictable.
- California wineries clamour for grapes grown in the Sonoma Coast region, as it’s the most enigmatic AVA the state has to offer, with more potential than most other areas.
- The wines produced are of exceptional quality: the 2014 Prosper Pinot Noir in particular is a medium-bodied beauty that’s fresh, bright, and delectable, with a brushy palate offering big, ripe blackberry and cherry flavor around a smoky core of oak.
- Coming on 50 years in the wine business in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, the winemaking team has adapted well to the coastal climate that produces such ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir, and uses the finest French oak to produce a wine with California Structure, and French Finesse.
- Pinot Noir fared wonderfully in the region for the 2014 vintage. Acids were generally softer, and there’s an abundance of intense aromatics with ripe but fine tannins and amazingly stunning, vibrant color.
A medium bodied wine with ripe berry flavors such as: blackberry, cranberry, and cherry. Also has hints of smoky oak flavors.
The 2014 winter and spring were unusually dry. When the rains came the timing was opportune and the vines took full advantage. The first big rain gave the vines some much-needed water before an early bud break. The temperate and dry conditions continued to promote growth. An exceptional summer gave way to perfect harvest conditions and teased out the nuances of our sites, developing complexity, aromatics, and deep flavors.
