The 2012 Cole Ranch Reserve Pinot from Esterlina is really a great wine, showing a bright red berry acidity that sets it apart from the wines of Anderson Valley and Russian River. Red cherry, plum and raspberry blend with rose petal, black pepper and just a hint of toasted oak in this well balanced and perfectly rested wine. Perfectly balanced, and a bit more Burgundian than the other Pinot tasted from Esterlina, you shouldn’t skip this one. Enjoy now through 2020. - DZ Sept 2016
Cole Ranch, California
A Pinot Noir to remember. But first you have to get your hands on it! Known for their award-winning selections, the Esterlina label is not always easy to find due to its limited production and loyal imbibers who make sure to cellar their bottles upon release.
Cuisine Noir mentioned the Sterling Family and their Esterlina label in Summer 2013: “Handcrafted and bottled at the estate for pure enjoyment.” And pure enjoyment their wines do bring. Our Tasting Panel notes this vintage is a bigger rendition than your average Pinot Noir with aromas that delightfully evolve each time you put your nose to the glass.
Reasons why we love it:
Sourced from Anderson Valley. Do we need to say more? If you are unfamiliar with the AVA, the North Coast Mendocino County beauty is home to some of the most prestigious Pinot Noir vines. You won’t find large productions working in the area, but rather a focused quality that puts Anderson Valley into one of the top Pinot Noir regions in North America.
What else is intriguing is this vintage was sourced and produced by one of the few African-American families in the wine industry. Stephen Sterling was quoted in a Wine Enthusiast article: “African-Americans are intrigued to find there are African-American producers and growers out there, especially when we account for only 1% of America’s wine production. Once consumers only knew the megabrands that could afford mass marketing, but since the Supreme Court ruling made it easier to ship nationwide, awareness of small brands like ours is improving.”
If you haven’t noticed, we pride ourselves on bringing you - Our Fabulous Members - the best wine deals around. And this one knocks even our wine-loving socks off. At 62% off, it makes any Pinotphile want to keep on wine-ing through the week! Not to mention, this beautiful boutique winery sold this summer and this may just be your last chance to enjoy this enticing Pinot Noir.
The exceptional 2012 vintage yielded a rich, robust Anderson Valley Pinot Noir with a delightful blend of sweet and savory elements. On the palate, beautifully delineated layers of freshly tilled earth, leather, lavender and pennyroyal are balanced by flavors of sweet Bing cherry, Japanese plum and black currant notes. The mouth feel is round and plump, gliding to a long, satisfying finish marked by lingering notes of chocolaty French oak.
Esterlina Vineyards is a family-owned, California winery.
We produce a variety of exceptional fine wines in limited quantities from grapes grown primarily in our family's own vineyards. We produce wines from our vineyards in three different appellations. In fact, Esterlina owns the only vineyard in the Cole Ranch Appellation, which is America's smallest American Viticultural Area (AVA).
Esterlina wines are handcrafted -- there is no assembly line manufacturing case after case. Our family grows the grapes, makes the wine, and bottles each varietal we offer.
While the wine conglomerates offer similar varietals, few wineries make their wines the way we do: bottle by bottle. From our world-class, award-winning Pinot Noirs, to our sought after Cabernet Sauvignon, wine enthusiasts love Esterlina wines. Our family's wines have been served at the White House on several occasions, and we hope you'll serve them at your house on special occasions - or any occasion. Come see us and enjoy a great wine tasting experience with stunning views of the Dry Creek Valley.
