The 2013 Reserve Pinot from Esterlina is all estate fruit from their Anderson Valley Vineyard, and a beautiful example of the lush fruit and refined structure unique to this area. Lifted notes of red cherry, violet and cola lead to a smooth and elegant palate of fresh red fruit, sweet tobacco, bramble and dark earth. The wine is perfectly balanced between the juicy acidity and fine grain tannin, through to the mouthwatering finish. Enjoy now through 2022. - DZ July 2016

One of the North Country’s finest Pinots—and from a winning vintage, too. The fate of the esteemed Esterlina label is unknown, but one thing is certain: This polished and very sexy Pinot will fly from our warehouse.
Until just over a month ago, this acclaimed label in Mendocino along with Everett Ridge Winery near Healdsburg were under the auspices of four brothers in the Sterling clan, a group of dedicated vintners making spectacular wines and one of the country’s only African American-owned wineries. The Sterlings made history—they also made incredible cult wines from estate vineyards. Esterlina and Everett Ridge were sold in June 2016—which is just when we happened to swoop in, securing as much of this Estate Pinot as possible!
The PinotFile writes: “Eric Sterling, M.D., is both a practicing emergency room physician and the winemaker and has an impressive touch with Pinot Noir. He is the only son to retain his occupation outside the family's wine business.” Fans of Esterlina (and there are MANY) are sorry to see the Sterlings go. This Reserve Pinot Noir offering with Free Shipping on 4+ bottles may very well be the last chance to enjoy the sterling wines of the original Esterlina Vineyard.
Reasons why we love it:
Esterlina makes wines from a range of California’s American Viticultural Areas, including the smallest AVA in the country: Cole Ranch. In fact, Esterlina owns the only vineyard in the entire Cole Ranch appellation!
The Wine Spectator writes on the subject of the Anderson Valley: “2013 was nearly an ideal season, with moderate temperatures and no rain or heat extremes.” This part of Mendocino county has long been claimed as a source of outstanding sparkling wines made-- as they are in Champagne-- of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It follows that these hills are also perfectly suited to the production of Pinot in its still form. The cool breezes that wash in daily from the nearby Pacific Coast help to moderate temperatures.
The terroir in the Anderson Valley is composed of marginal, hard soil intermixed with sandstone and shale with huge boulders and outcroppings of bedrock breaking up the vineyard into small blocks of tough, determined Pinot vines. All these challenges translate to miniscule yields in the best vintages and much less when the weather fails to cooperate.
The 2013 Pinot Noir is a full expression of Anderson Valley terroir. Splendid aromas of pomegranate, bing cherry, orange, sweet herbs, and vanilla can be found with every swirl and sniff. On the palate the wine is round and plush with a fresh acidity to carry the fruit and add length to the finish.
Esterlina Vineyards is a family-owned, California winery.
We produce a variety of exceptional fine wines in limited quantities from grapes grown primarily in our family's own vineyards. We produce wines from our vineyards in three different appellations. In fact, Esterlina owns the only vineyard in the Cole Ranch Appellation, which is America's smallest American Viticultural Area (AVA).
Esterlina wines are handcrafted -- there is no assembly line manufacturing case after case. Our family grows the grapes, makes the wine, and bottles each varietal we offer.
While the wine conglomerates offer similar varietals, few wineries make their wines the way we do: bottle by bottle. From our world-class, award-winning Pinot Noirs, to our sought after Cabernet Sauvignon, wine enthusiasts love Esterlina wines. Our family's wines have been served at the White House on several occasions, and we hope you'll serve them at your house on special occasions - or any occasion. Come see us and enjoy a great wine tasting experience with stunning views of the Dry Creek Valley.
This is an exceptional wine with food and will pair beautifully with a charcuterie plate, pan seared duck breast, wild mushroom risotto, or grilled swordfish
