Nose with cherry, wild raspberry, brambly spice and some vanilla notes.  Spicy cherry with cranberry and strawberry on the palate and layers of leather and spice with toasted cedar.  This is still a very young wine with nice gripping tannin structure.  Great acid with nice balance and a long fruit finish with a nice dose of mineral.  Approachable now, but its best years are certainly ahead of it.  - 92 TW

Small lot Carneros Pinot Noir with exciting pedigree (the previous vintage won acclaim with 92 points from the Pinot Report and Gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition),  it's a rich production with names like Schug's Winemaker of the Year, Mike Cox, Iund (Vineyard) and Sangiacomo at the heart of its greatness. Plucked direct from the winery owners' library, it's a selection firing on all cylinders, 

Things to Know:

With a passion for Pinot Noir, Mike Cox (who’s has been in the wine business for twenty hears, the last twelve of which as winemaker at Schug Winery in Carneros) and Tina Cox (a wine veteran and Mike’s wife and business partner) consistently produce wines that are altogether memorable. Wines that enjoy the benefit of highly coveted fruit from the very best vineyards (sources that also happen to be lifelong friends of Mike & Tina’s), it’s the origin of hand-crafted, Burgundian flare with a sophisticated Carneros style.

Displaying great balance and finesse, this wine is what you call a “triple-threat Pinot”. Grown in the perfect climate for this fickle grape; picked in the best of vintages and crafted from a Pinot producer who consistently wins merit and high ratings, it’s without exception, a trifecta winner for Pinot lovers. Exuding cherry, wild raspberry, brambly spice and some vanilla notes on the nose, it’s a wine that leads to spicy cherry and layers of leather and spice on the palate.

The cool, tricky conditions that make up the various vineyard plots of the Carneros AVA are by now synonymous with quality Pinot Noir. Behind this particular bottling of Mayro Murdick Pinot sits Iund, a 30-year-old vineyard that deserves all the accolades that have been foisted upon it over the decades. Grapes from another stand-out, well-established site in Carneros—Sangiacomo Tallgrass—make up the difference in this classic cool-climate Pinot Noir.

The majority of grapes for this wine hail from the 30+-year-old, very coveted vines of Carneros’ Iund Vineyard. Acacia, Harrington and Schug have all sought fruit from this established Pinot site, which is planted entirely with the famed Pommard clone and has contributed to more award winning Pinot Noirs than just about any vineyard in the New World.

TASTING NOTES 

Silky textured but thick and lush, this 2008 PN is as refined as it is sumptuous with baking spice and cherry cola aromatics and rich vanilla bean and plum on the palate. A fascinating interplay of rhubarb and purple flowers pushes this to a level of complexity rarely seen in wines at this price point and proves that while fads come and go, good things come from those places that have aced the test of time.

Flavors of cinnamon, rhubarb, cherry and vanilla drive the nose, ultimately opening up to a nice floral scent. In the mouth, the sweet, rich flavor offers round cherry, with a great length and a long finish. The wine’s ruby color reflects the old vine characteristics of the storied Iund vineyard. Elevation in small French oak barrels has allowed the wine’s terroir-specific fruit flavors to mature and develop into a refined, elegant pinot noir. This is vintage Carneros, showing strong aging potential and flavors that will blossom with time.

THE STORY TO KNOW

A husband and wife team, owners Mike and Tina Cox share a love of Pinot Noir and a rich history with the varietal. Like a perfect blend, the couple married their experiences (and each other) to produce wines for “Pinophiles”, people interested in exploring great Pinot Noirs from great Pinot Noir growing regions.

Expanding on Mike’s renowned winemaking career, acclaimed for crafting award-winning Pinot Noir, each Mayro Murdick vintage is recognized for producing wines that are drinkable, agreeable and truly reflect where the wine was made.

We believe that Carneros is producing some of the most unique, rich and true Pinot Noirs available today. And, it starts with the vineyards. The backbone of our wine – the Iund Vineyard – leads a storied life in Carneros. For over 30 years, the Iund vineyard has delivered, producing many award-winning Carneros wines. Together with grapes from Sangiacomo Tallgrass, this pommard-based blend strongly represents the Carneros appellation from vintage to vintage.
