"This is a major upgrade from a entry-level Bourgogne Rouge! Freshly muddled ripe red fruits laced with chinese five spice, chamomile tea and morels. Focused minerality adds a vibrancy that transitions into a long and balanced earth driven finish." Neil Mechanic, invino Premier Member Concierge, 92 Insider Points
Burgundy-lovers’ burgundy: this is the real stuff! Delicately colored, ethereally scented Pinot Noir from a traditional producer based in Morey St. Denis, hand selected by our Premier Member Concierge.
From in and around the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St.-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny comes the beautiful Bourgogne “Les Grands Champs” from Gérard Raphet. Succulent and sapid, with aromas of exotic spice, violets, fragrant raspberries and a palate with fine red-fruit flavors, plum, clean sweet earth and a zesty lift to the finish.
Things to know:
The 2011 Les Grands Champs Bourgogne Rouge was fermented with approximately 10% whole cluster included, for around 12 days, before being gently pressed and aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. Very little new oak use, less than 5%, means that the fruit sings brightly in this delicious, vivacious red!
The domaine is based in Morey-St.-Denis, home of the four stunning Grand Cru vineyards Clos de la Roche, Clos des Lambrays, Clos de Tart and of course Clos Saint-Denis. The soils are a mixture of limestone-based marls of ancient origin, from the Bajocian and Bathonian ages of the mid-Jurassic epoch.
Gérard took over the estate from his father Jean around 12 years ago, and since that time he’s reduced yields somewhat to increase the concentration and quality in the wines.
An absolute gem of a Bourgogne. Crushed raspberries and baking spices on the aromatic nose; the mouth is lively and juicy, with touches of white pepper and a delicious flood of ripe red berries. The finish is fresh, clean and sapid.
Raphet wines are a Burgundy lover’s Burgundy. They are best appreciated by those familiar with the light color and earthy flavors of classic Burgundian Pinot Noir.
Raphet over decades has become the favorite Burgundy of customers and employees alike. They are wines that many feel “speak” especially and directly to them -- not dissimilar to a work of art.
The wine's aromas depart from the traditional Burgundian violets to suggest a potpourri of cinnamon, clove and incense. The wine’s light color and fine texture requires studied attention on behalf of the drinker.
A versatile and easy-drinking wine that goes well with grilled meats and ham, terrines and pâtes or with a cheese platter.
