Give It Time to Breath, and It'll Blow Your Taste Buds Away
As many well know, there are wines that need a bit of time to open up. Once that door of flavor is completely ajar, a wine can shine as bright as our sun. Verdet's 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin needs about 15-20 minutes to breath, and it's worth every second. I'll admit I wasn't a big fan immediately after popping the cork, and would not have scored as I did right off the bat. Now that the profile has had a chance to fully express itself, this is a Burg that makes it onto my list of Favorites.
A ripe berry perfume floats to the nose. Rounded flavors on the palate, light bodied with grip. Juicy red currant, passionfruit and raspberry mid-palate, leading into a tart cherry and raspberry finish. Balance like this is hard to come by. Whether you're a New World or an Old World drinker, I recommend this to all Pinot lovers.

Alain Verdet, Aurelien’s father and a fellow Burgundian winemaker, was a true pioneer of organic viticulture and oenology in this part of France. Alain passed his winemaking philosophy along with the family’s small but propitious vineyard holdings to his son, as is traditional in Burgundy. And all those decades of sustainable farming practices continue to pay off, as evidenced in this classic Gevery-Chambertin.
Aurelien’s Gevrey Chambertin plot, planted by Alain in the 1970s, sits just to the east of Mazis Chambertin—a Grand Cru vineyard and one of the Cote d’Or’s best. At just 0.75 hectares, the site produces painfully small amounts of incredible source fruit. Verdet’s 2013 Gevrey evinces gorgeous floral aromatics of purple violet and wild rose which lead to a palate impression of forest floor, delicate wild berry and savory earth.
The domaine is not certified organic, as Verdet is interested not in dogma or legalities, but in a truly natural way of working the earth and the grape. In his own words, this is winemaking “done by feel, by taste, by intuition, by the phases of the moon and as the wines from each parcel and from each vintage demand.”

Aurélien VERDET, born in April 1981, is an enthusiastic, driven young man. His father was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture back in the early 1970’s and since his retirement in 2005, Aurélien has carried on the tradition. Aurélien’s own Domaine comprised 4.5 hectares of Hautes Côtes de Nuits until 2009. In that year, he took over vines under a farming agreement in Vosne Romanée village and 1er cru Beaux Monts and 1er cru Nuits Damodes and Boudots. This entitled him to call them Domaine holdings.
He augments his range through grape contracts under which he lays down the criteria for the early part of the growing season with his suppliers. He then takes over the vineyard work in July, harvests and vinifies the grapes then bottles the wines.
