2011 Was An Excellent Year In Burgundy. It Shows, Aux Boudots. It Shows.

The more I dive into Burgundy wines the more they intrigue my palate. So much variation across one region! Thus is the essence of terroir, and Aurelian Verdet's 2011 "Aux Boudots" is a shining example of Burg done very well.

Notes of cream & blackberry on the nose. A mellow palate with balanced acidity, strawberry, cranberry, mushrooms and tart red currant. It has a lengthy finish of savory dried cranberries. Another Premier Cru well worth every penny. 95 Points - JZ November '17

  • Aurelien Verdet continues to live up to his forebears’ legacy. His father championed the organic and biodynamic movements as waves of ‘save the terroir’ rolled through the storied countryside. With time-tested, nearly puritanical techniques in the vineyard, Aurelien set about building a new winery to ensure that every bottle delivers on the promise grown in the hallowed soil of his vineyards.
  • Just ¾ quarters of an acre. That’s how precious this fruit has become. Planted in the 1960s by Aurelien’s father, these Aux Boudots vines are exalted. The plot lies just between Grand Cru Vosnee Romanee and Premier Cru Damodes. Organically farmed, this is a bottle built for the ages…and your cellar.
  • And nothing helps out a great vineyard quite like a good season. Wine Spectator raved about 2011 in Burgundy. They fell hard for the “elegant, perfumed wines, with vibrant acidity, pure fruit, and juicy textures.” To be fair, so did we. And not winemaker was better poised to frame the season than Verdet.

THE STORY TO KNOW

Aurélien VERDET, born in April 1981, is an enthusiastic, driven young man. His father was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture back in the early 1970’s and since his retirement in 2005, Aurélien has carried on the tradition. Aurélien’s own Domaine comprised 4.5 hectares of Hautes Côtes de Nuits until 2009. In that year, he took over vines under a farming agreement in Vosne Romanée village and 1er cru Beaux Monts and 1er cru Nuits Damodes and Boudots. This entitled him to call them Domaine holdings.

He augments his range through grape contracts under which he lays down the criteria for the early part of the growing season with his suppliers. He then takes over the vineyard work in July, harvests and vinifies the grapes then bottles the wines.
