91 Editors' Choice - Wine Enthusiast

Suave and well-mannered, this medium-bodied wine is like suede in feel. Flavors of red and black cherries give an overall impression of breadth and gentleness that's hard to resist. It has attractive oak nuances of baking spices and light-roast coffee to add complexity. -Wine Enthusiast

Charlie Barra is no newcomer to wine, and he’s in no danger of getting swept up into the latest winemaking trends. Barra makes wine like they used to back before synthetic fertilizers and chemical insecticides. His estate vines have been certified organic for decades. But for decades before that—prior to the existence of “organic certification,” Barra farmed his vineyards naturally, sharing his little corner of North Coast paradise with his family and a thriving population of jackrabbits, coyotes, deer and the occasional bear.

Barra’s 2016 Pinot Noir show’s the farmer/winemaker’s talent for growing perfect fruit and allowing the grapes to make their own wine. Balanced and supremely silky on the palate, this estate-grown gem is forward with black cherry fruit and a touch of exotic spice. Brief aging in French oak barrels adds a delicately sweet whiff of vanilla and cedar. Drink this young Pinot with wild salmon or poultry, though this Mendo Pinot is also lush enough to enjoy on its own.

·    The 2016 vintage was “Outstanding” for North Coast Pinot Noir, according to the Wine Advocate.

·    Charlie Barra has been farming grapes since the mid 1940s, inheriting his love of viticulture from both his father, Antonio Barra, and his maternal grandfather, Giuseppe Rovera, who came to Mendocino from Piedmonte, Italy at the turn of last century.

·    Barra had the opportunity to purchase Redwood Valley Vineyards in 1954, and jumped at the chance to farm that ranch’s 175 acres of organically raised wine grapes.

·    All of Barra’s vineyards are certified by the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) and have been for more than 20 years.

From the winery:

Lush black cherry notes on the palate follow through, and aging in French oak barrels has contributed a long finish with notes of vanilla and coconut.
