A distinctive red, with a sweet aroma of burning vine cuttings leading to flavors of wild strawberry and cherry. A mineral note emerges as this lingers on the languid, chalk-tinged finish. Best from 2016 through 2025. -Wine Spectator

Perhaps best known for white wines from Meursault, Domaine Pierre Matrot is on a tear in recent vintages, producing Pinot Noir from single vineyards every bit the equal in quality to the estate’s famous Bourguignon blancs. From its limited holdings in Volnay “Santenots” Matrot produces a red wine that somehow evinces weight, power and charm simultaneously.

Matrot’s “Santenots” was made using a exceedingly light crushing of the grapes, native yeast fermentation and aging in French oak (just 10-20% of the barrels are new each vintage)--in other words, with precious little manipulation in the cellar, which allows for the vineyard’s robust yet graceful character to come shining gloriously through.

From the winemaker:

The terroir of Santenots, situated in the commune of Meursault, produces red wines which are rich and powerful, yet at the same time fine and delicate. After five to ten years of patience you will discover all the complexity and richness of this terroir, which will best be revealed if served with duck, a leg of lamb or truffled Bresse chicken.

Joseph MATROT (1881-1963), the grandson of owners of a family wine estate in Puligny-Montrachet and Blagny, lived with his wife Marguerite Amoignon and their three children at Château d’Evelle. Marguerite also owned a beautiful wine estate in Meursault. In 1914 they took up residence in Marguerite’s family home, which is today the seat of Domaine Matrot, and decided to develop and extend the estate.

Their son , PIERRE MATROT began working as a winegrower in 1937. He also bought vineyards, modernised the estate and, together with is wife Simone Bonin, had five children.

Having obtained a degree in winegrowing and oenology in BeauneThierry MATROT Pierre’s son born in 1955, continued with business studies in Mâcon Davayé.
He joined the estate in 1976 and took over the vinification from 1983 on. Together with his father Thierry he continued to establish the reputation of Domaine Matrot and its wines.

In January 2000, Thierry and Pascale Matrot established and developed a limited liability company allowing them to buy and sell the harvest of the vineyards of “Héritiers du Domaine Joseph Matrot”.
Thierry has been running the estates SCE Pierre Matrot and Héritiers du Domaine Joseph Matrot for many years. He ensures constantly high quality regarding all stages of the winemaking process: cultivation of the vines, vinification, maturing the wines and selling them.
