Aren’t all rosé pretty much simple picnic wines meant to drink without much thought? The answer is a resounding “no” and, also, ‘yes’!
Take this bottle of liquid sunshine—a slurpable dry rosé that achieved a nearly perfect score and a Double Gold medal from the 2018 Experience Rosé Competition, a double-blind wine contest that pits pinks against pinks from every corner of the winemaking world. Replete with wild strawberry and blood orange aromatics leading to a crisp palate of citric lime-like acidity melding into summertime watermelon and even dash of tropical passionfruit, the 2017 Sassoferrato is anything but simple. And yet, to fully appreciate this juicy, mouthful of bright fruit no deep contemplation of terroir is necessary. Just a glass (or a tumbler) and good friends.
· Winemaker Matt Smith spent 11 years crafting delicious reds and whites at Jackson Family Wines before creating his own Sassoferrato label—a personal homage to Italian winemaking.
· A youth spent to France, where dry rosé wine was a fixture at the table for much of the year, Smith developed an early appreciation for the style and its natural affinity for Mediterranean foods.
· While Grenache and Pinot Noir are the varietals most often associated with domestic rosé, Italy’s native Sangiovese makes incredible pink wine noted for its wild berry and subtle spice notes as well as food-friendly acidity.
· Protected by mountains and ancient forests from the chill of the Pacific Ocean, Mendocino County offers superior conditions for relatively late-ripening Sangiovese.
This fruit forward and mouthwatering rosé has notes of grapefruit, passionfruit, and watermelon.
