"I first came across Angeli di Varano when I met Matteo Chiucconi 4 years while running my import company. Like many of the amazing wines in unknown Le Marche, he and his brother's wines left me in awe, and I was sad I was unable to bring them in at the time. Now, 4 years later, they came back across my desk via a local tip, and I responded with "hey I know these guys"! It was an exciting moment, and I am even more excited to be presenting the Chiucconi Brothers' exquisite Montepulciano, Primo di Tre, the first of their lineup.
Deep plum and fresh herbs on the nose. Full bodied and showing delicious notes of tart black cherry, cassis, mint, earthy oak and tobacco leaf. It has a long, savory finish. Continues to open through the 2nd day. Will age another 5-10 years. Happy to be their exclusive importer, and ecstatic to be enjoying their wines again. "93 Points - JZ Sept '18
"Ripe berry and spice aromas take center stage in the 100% Montelpulciano from Marche. The ripe, round palate delivers juicy black cherry and black berry along with cinnamon-spice. There's no complexity here but it's ripe, round and delicious. Enjoy this soon." -Wine Enthusiast
Rosso Conero DOC, Le Marche
“Rugged and approachable, Rosso Conero is an Italian red wine just right for today's wine lovers,” writes Forbes magazine in 2017. Just such a statement sent our Sourcing Team to this little-known appellation in Italy’s isolated Marche region on a search for a new Direct Import bargain red.
Angelo di Varano is a family-owned winery that—like the Marche region itself--has changed little through the generations. With an annual total production of less than 2000 cases of vino, it’s little wonder our Sourcing Team had not heard of Angelo di Varano until the micro-estate was recommended by locals during a recent trip to Italy. From vineyards situated just about halfway between the sea and the mountains, brothers Lorenzo and Matteo Chiucconi make a mesmerizing Rosso Conero offering up heaps of Marasca cherry and rich blackberry fruit backed by tannins that are still going strong four years post harvest. This full-bodied, spicy red is incredible when served with wild hare or boar—for those Members who are adventurous eaters. Luckily for the rest of us, this Member Exclusive from Italy’s heartland is also stupendous with steaks and chops.
· Angelo di Varano is a family affair and has been for going on three generations. Today this boutique winery is run by the brothers Chiucconi, Lorenzo, the businessman, and Matteo, the winemaker. Matteo learned his craft in prestigious wineries across the world - Rutherford Hill Winery of Napa Valley; Haselgrove of McLaren Vale; Thesta of Greece; and Colli Ripani in his native Marche. (For those who speak Italian, or if you're just curious, you can hear the winery's story straight from Lorenzo here.)
· From Vinous: “The Marche’s wines deserve to be on shopping lists of wine lovers everywhere….”
· Le Marche means “the marches,” in other words, the borderlands. Within this rarely visited region there is nearly every kind of topography imaginable. Locals boast that one can ski here in the morning and swim in the sea in the afternoon. It's this diverse topography that makes for thousands of microclimates ideal for winegrowing. Angeli di Varano's own microclimate is thanks to its position just under the Monte Conero, a giant limestone formation that juts out of the coast, giving Italy its little "elbow".
· Made from 100% Montepulciano, which is not to be confused with Tuscany’s Rosso di Montepulciano (made from Sangiovese grown within the Montepulciano zone). In the case of Rosso Conero, the grape is Montepulciano, a cherished varietal found throughout the Marche. The region has ideal conditions for the native grape, with hot summers to help the late-ripening grape reach its full potential.
A balanced and powerful wine. Contains intense red fruits and pepper flavors.
Angeli di Varano "Three generations linked by a single passion, that is the love for their land.
It is from the story of the Family Chiucconi that comes the challenge of the two brothers Lorenzo and Matteo, to produce the best grapes in compliance with the traditions and to obtain the absolute excellence of Rosso Conero wine, thus giving this beautiful wine the prestige it deserves.
The clowns have chosen the best clones and the best exposures of a "cru" of the conero to implant the most important wine-grape of this area, the prestigious MONTEPULCIANO.
The perfect ripening of the grapes, the excellent exposure of the vineyards, the selection of grapes on the field to the best and to excel in quality. Undamaged product.
This will make an excellent pairing with a rich pasta dish or delicious poultry dish such as roasted turkey.
