I first met the Brothers Chiucconi years back whilst running about import company that focused specifically on wines from Le Marche. They were a pair that stuck out among the wide array of artisan producers, and I'm excited to be presenting this next label from them. Let this one breath 20-30 minutes for voluptuous red fruits on the palate. Full bodied with red cherry, pomegranate, cinnamon, dark chocolate and oak. The finish is long and satisfying. If you take a trip to Italy, be sure to add Le Marche and Angeli di Varano bed & breakfast to your itinerary. 93 Points - JZ Oct '18
“Free style” is the literal translation of this Riserva red—a luscious, full-bodied wine that may finally bring the Le Marche region in general and the Conero Riserva DOCG more specifically the attention they both so heartily deserve.
Barolo is king in Piedmonte. Brunello reigns in Tuscany. And Conero Riserva stands alone in Le Marche as the region’s top red wine appellation. Our Sourcing Team fell in love with Angeli di Varano Rosso Conero on last year’s trip to this family-owned estate in central Italy, and Members quickly cottoned on to that wine’s incredible value (not to mention its easy affinity to typical Italian cuisine).
A step up in quality, and once again made from 100% estate-grown Montepulciano, Angeli di Varano’s Stile Libero has the added benefit of 24 months maturation in barrel, which tamed this rugged red’s intense structure. In this Conero Riserva proprietors (and brothers) Lorenzo and Matteo Chiucconi have produced one of the most serious wines our team has tasted yet from the Marche, and it ranks right up there with the best from Tuscany and Piedmonte, too. Drink with food, preferably something saucy and red-meat based.
· “Rugged and approachable, Rosso Conero is an Italian red wine just right for today's wine lovers,” writes Forbes magazine in 2017.
· Le Marche means “the marches,” in other words, the borderlands. Within this rarely visited region there is nearly every kind of topography imaginable. Locals boast that one can ski here in the morning and swim in the sea in the afternoon.
· Made from 100% Montepulciano, which is NOT the same as Tuscany’s Rosso di Montepulciano, a DOC red made from a variety of Sangiovese grown within the Montepulciano zone. In this case, the grape variety is Montepulciano, and it’s a cherished native found throughout Abruzzo and the Marche.
· Angelo di Varano is a family affair and has been for going on three generations. Today this boutique winery is run by brothers Lorenzo and Matteo Chiucconi.
A bold, lucious, and structured wine with dark fruit flavors and spices.
Angeli di Varano "Three generations linked by a single passion, that is the love for their land.
It is from the story of the Family Chiucconi that comes the challenge of the two brothers Lorenzo and Matteo, to produce the best grapes in compliance with the traditions and to obtain the absolute excellence of Rosso Conero wine, thus giving this beautiful wine the prestige it deserves.
The clowns have chosen the best clones and the best exposures of a "cru" of the conero to implant the most important wine-grape of this area, the prestigious MONTEPULCIANO.
The perfect ripening of the grapes, the excellent exposure of the vineyards, the selection of grapes on the field to the best and to excel in quality. Undamaged product.
Pair with a saucy and savory red meat dish.
