"One of a handful of Barossa Valley grenaches with the same weight and power as top-flight McLaren Vale grenache. It has abundant red cherry, raspberry, blueberry and plum fruits allied with firm tannins, and no confection/ Turkish Delight nuances. Moreover, it will react positively to maturation. Screwcap. 15% alc. To 2030" - James Halliday, 2018

This is a pretty, lifted, light- to medium-bodied style that erupts with aromas of ripe cherries, baking spices, red licorice and rose petals. The palate is juicy in feel, with tight-grained tannins and a long, savory finish. - Wine Enthusiast

Layered and Complex, Exactly What I Need From Grenache

Wood & white pepper nose, followed by a peppery palate of black currant, black raspberry, light tobacco and aniseed on a light body. Oaky tones come out through a long finish. 94 Points - JZ Oct '18

The Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy may not be a household name in the U.S. but in Australia it’s major. Given annually at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards, the trophy is Australia’s most coveted honor. In the award’s 56-year history, the trophy had not ever been bestowed on a Grenache—that is, until the release of this Grenache from Turkey Flat.

The historic win is no surprise when looking at this Grenache’s credentials. Grapes were sourced mainly from Turkey Flat’s incredible 98-year-old estate vineyard, which at this stage produces precious little fruit. Vines are pruned in the goblet style—the favored method for old-vine Grenache in the Southern Rhone Valley. Perhaps this is the reason for this intense red’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape-like aromatics of garrigue and spice along with typical Grenache notes of brambly raspberry and a juicy, crunchy finish of minerals. Hand grown and hand picked, this elegant red was matured in a combination of new and neutral French oak. Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.

·    Named after the bush turkey that once roamed the area, Turkey Flat was founded by fourth generation grape growers Peter and Christie Schulz.

·    Back in 1994 Turkey Flat was credited with igniting Australia’s ‘rosé revival’ as one of the country’s leading producers of dry pink wine, another of Turkey Flat’s explosively delicious Grenache-based wines.

·    The newly minted 2016 vintage saw quite warm temperatures throughout the growing period in the Barossa, accounting to an excellent crop of perfectly ripened grapes.

·    The Barossa is home to some of Australia’s oldest plantings of Grenache and Shiraz, the earliest of which were established here in in the 1840s.

From the winery:

Power. Balance. Black fruit. Inspired by the savoury Grenache of the Old World – darker, tannic, herbaceous & spicy, this lascivious little wonder shows off its suitability for the climate in which it is grown.

From the winery:

Welcome to the old Schulz family butchers shop, now the heart of Turkey Flat and the home of our cellar door. This wonderful old bluestone building is tucked away on the edge of Tanunda in the beautiful Barossa Valley, completely surrounded by our historic vineyards, dating back to 1847.

From the winery:

Pair with tapas, lamb, tomato-rich dishes, food to be eaten in the sun. This darker style also pairs exceptionally well with steak, particularly when aged.
