Very Good- Wine Enthusiast
"Bright, deep ruby. Classic cabernet aromas of cassis, blackberry, graphite minerality and spicecake, accented by an exotic note of orange zest. Sappy, creamy and deep, showing outstanding verve to its sweet blackberry, cassis, licorice, fresh herb and mineral flavors. Conveys a very concentrated tiny-berry character. A strong and ageworthy wine with a serious tannic spine.”- Vinous
"This wine leads with somewhat locked-up, slightly porty aromas of herb, barrel spice and dark fruit. The ripe, rich dark fruit flavors show considerably more generosity, with firm, slightly gritty tannins backing them up."- Wine Enthusiast
Walla Walla Valley, Washington

Tranche’s Blue Mountain Estate is high on our to-drink list. It’s also one of the highest elevations in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley. This is a Mountain Cab that packs a punch from an up-and-coming region known for expressive wines. The full-bodied beauty displays a full-house of powerful, black fruit flavors infused with sage, dried violets, and red earth. It’s a stunner that’ll have you, your friends, and relatives you haven’t heard from in ages begging for more.
Why we love it:
- Tranche’s estate lies in the eastern slopes of the Blue Mountains in Walla Walla. The view of the rolling valley floor vineyards from 1,200 feet is expansive enough to make your heart skip a beat. Planted to the world’s famed grapes (Bordeaux and Rhone varietals, and a bit of Sangiovese), Tranche ensures that the vineyard will thrive by employing sustainable viticulture with an eye toward biodynamic practices in the future.
- The silt-loam soil called Loess (luhss, if you want to sound it out) endemic to this region are a result of flooding 12 to 15 thousand years ago. Well drained and deep, the soil in combination with sunny days, moderate rainfall, and fabulous airflow creates the ultimate sweet spot for happy, healthy vines.
- Founders Michael and Lori Corliss have harnessed their land and their love of viticulture to create a depth of flavor and character unlike anything else. This Cab is balanced and engaging. And it’s only gonna get better with time.
Awwww Factor: The cutest lawncare you can find anywhere roams Tranche’s vineyards. A flock of Old English Southdown Babydoll sheep aren’t tall enough to reach the grapes and so munch on undergrowth and groundcover.
Powerful dark fruit aromas of blackberry, wild fig and cassis infuse with floral and herbaceous notes of violet, tea leaf and sage. The wine is full-bodied and creamy in texture, showing highly polished tannins and a tremendous depth to its earthy, dark fruit flavors. Supple and densely packed tannins combine with seamless minerality to draw out the palate to a rich, long-lasting finish.
*invino maintain excellent cellaring conditions, and strives to sell every bottle in pristine condition. As is standard industry practice, any wine purchased over seven vintage years old, is sold "as is" and more not be returned for any reason.
From the winery...
In straight translation, tranche is a French term meaning slice. To us, it means that and much more.
The Blue Mountain Vineyards play an essential role in our portfolio. We are working with carefully-selected varietals matched to a specific, unique, weather-blessed location. In terms of altitude, aspect, rainfall, and all the other factors that enter into the taste of a place – often referred to as terroir – the Blue Mountain Estate Vineyard is truly one of a kind.
We cultivate a diverse collection of some of the world’s most interesting grape varietals, with more being planted as we learn and explore. We practice only sustainable viticulture, hand-farming each block, in order to harvest very low yields of intensely-flavored fruit.
By design, Tranche has a totally different personality than our sister winery, Corliss. Corliss is more timeless, Tranche more cutting edge and exploratory. There is no compromising on quality, just a different path to achieving it. At Tranche we produce expressive, aromatic, beautifully-defined varietal wines and blends.
The Tranche wines based upon Rhône Valley varietals are comprised of Slice of Pape (pronounced “pop”) which pays homage to the blended red, Pink Pape is our rosé and Pape Blanc is comprised of white varieties of the Southern Rhône. All are made exclusively from estate-grown grapes.
We believe that, when done well, pure varietal, single vineyard wines offer the best glimpse of both grape and site. That is the target and goal – to extend the range and depth of flavor in every bottle of Tranche that you taste.
A taste of Tranche is a slice of life… the life of the place, the vines, the people who make the wines, and most of all, you who drink them. We have given our lives over to making every bottle worthy of your attention.
Try this with braised stews, grilled meat or charcuterie, or a roaring fire and a good book all pair well with this elegant cab.
