A gem from Oakville on a small block of 100 acres of which only 25 are planted (so far).
A wine for those who love Cabernet and for those who admit to a degree of impatience. This classic Cab comes from 2009—a vintage that got 94 points in Parker’s Wine Advocate, while the San Francisco Chronicle had this to say on 2009 Napa Cabernet: “At their best, the 2009 Cabernets show a distinct vitality that has too often been missing in recent years - red fruit flavors that lift the wines beyond the dark, jammy bass tones that became common fare by the vintages of the early 2000s.”
These 2009s needed time. Well, this 2009 has had the perfect amount of time and is drinking so beautifully right now we had to put a strict limit on how many “samples” our Tasting Panel could uncork! Vine Cliff’s “Rock Block” shows the finesse and elegance of this vintage—a cooler than average one for the Valley. Complex aromatic notes of Mirabel plum, black olive and tar with more typical Napa characters like blackberries and cassis. In the mouth this ideally mature Napa Cab sings with smoothed out tannins and a warm palate of more plum and subtle pepper.
Free shipping on 3 or more bottles means this ’09 Cab from a small, family-owned property in Oakville will fly from our warehouse, as it should! Try this with meat or poultry or as a fascinating sipper and a great representation of Napa terroir and exceptional winemaking.
Reasons why we love it:
Vine Cliff was one of the first wineries in the Napa Valley to welcome wholeheartedly the idea of organic viticulture and to take the principles of sustainability very seriously—whether in the vineyard or when it comes to making wine. No commercial pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers are allowed here, and the result is an upswing in local flora and fauna, not to mention, cleaner, healthier wines.
The 2009 vintage in Napa is characterized by elegant Cabernets that feature lots of defined fruit flavors, tannins and structure. These are not fruit bombs, and the best of the 2009s showed a degree of concentration that benefited by a handful of years in the cellar. Vine Cliff’s 2009 Rock Block is one such wine, and that maturation process has already occurred, making this a delight to pop open tonight.
Aroma: Nuanced aromas of both red and dark fruits, with blueberries and red cherries playing a leading role. Hints of spice, bay leaf and cocoa add layers of complexity and character. Palate: Entering with bright sweet fruit, the palate is rich, full bodied and powerful. Shades of mocha and molasses from the French oak provide a complexity that lingers through the finish.
Vine Cliff Winery is a small, family-owned winery located in the Oakville appellation of the Napa Valley. We proudly create premium Napa Valley wines that capture the essence and magic of the region.
The Vine Cliff of today maintains a commitment to live up to its historic legacy by working with the best possible fruit and the best winemaking technology to make the high scoring wines in its portfolio. For the past few years, The Sweeney Family has invested heavily in vineyards located in the most desirable grape growing locations.
Since 1990, all of Vine Cliff's vineyards have been managed according to the principles and practices of sustainable viticulture, with a renewed emphasis on natural farming. This has meant that no commercial pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers have been used, when possible, on the vines for more than a decade. Additionally, 10 tons of organic materials are returned to the soil as compost annually. The vineyards have native species of grasses planted as ground cover between the rows of vines. These are never ploughed under but only cut-allowed to naturally compost and further enrich the soil. The most ecologically complex and diverse biosystem has been established at Vine Cliff estate vineyards over the years and has resulted in the protection of its wildlife and habitat.
This Cab is made for steak, lamb, duck, or just about anything off the grill.
