"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with notes of candied violets, licorice and scorched earth over a crème de cassis and stewed plums core with a waft of sautéed herbs. Full-bodied and packed with black fruit preserves and savory accents, it has a firm, chewy frame and finishes with emerging exotic spices."

James Suckling, 93 points
""A firm and silky red with chewy tannins that are fruit-coated and delicious. Full body, lightly chewy texture and a flavorful finish. Better in 2020.""

Jeb Dunnuck, 93 points
"From fruit in Rutherford, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon was made by Sam Baxter and spent 22 months in 60% new French oak. It gives up a spicy, complex bouquet of spiced plums, sandalwood, mint, and incense. This gives way to a totally charming, balanced Cabernet that has medium to full-bodied richness, a rounded texture, and present yet sweet tannins. It's a sexy, forward charmer to drink over the coming 10-12 years."

Greatest Monday ever? Wow! $100 Cabernet for $50? Yes please! Chaix is a relatively new producer, but they’ve been selling grapes for years to some of the most high-end wineries you can think of. They have PRIME land right next to the legendary Scarecrow vineyard in Rutherford proper (that one sells for between $200-$1000!!).

We are incredibly lucky to live and breathe Napa Valley, so we are one of the very few places you can even FIND this powerhouse! The style of the new 2016 is a little richer and fuller than the last vintage, with a little more polish, too -- TRUST YOUR WINE MERCHANT, this drinks like something that costs way WAY more scratch. It reminds us of wines like BV’s $150 Georges de Latour bottling, or perhaps something from Staglin or Mondavi Reserve. Anyway, it drinks WAY over our price. Cassis, dusty wild blackberries, sweet spices and a touch of muscularity, it will last for a decade easily (well, not in our house, but you know what we mean).

Drop dead amazing! While it lasts…!

THE STORY TO KNOW

"Our story in the Napa Valley began more than 110 years ago. Our goal as growers has remained consistent over the century – let our fruit reflect the essential elements of the land and the qualities of the growing season. As vintners our philosophy is much the same.  At Chaix Wines we handcraft a Cabernet Sauvignon with grapes sourced exclusively from our historic estate.  We let the fruit inform and guide the winemaking process, capturing the flavors and characteristics for which Rutherford is internationally famous. This has been our winemaking program since our first vintage in 2008." - Kathy Chaix and John Chaix
