"Etude, a Study in Layers
What do you look for in an awesome Napa Cab? Me, I'm always on the prowl for complex, layered wines that show distinctive characteristics, flavors that really stand out from one another. Enter Etude. Their Cab is right up that alley, with a fun exposition of what to look for in this style of wine.
Graphite & plum jam on the nose. Full-bodied, the palate is layered with dried tobacco, fig, prune, black currant, pencil lead, light eucalyptus and anise. It has a long finish with dry blackberry. Hard to keep a full glass with this one. Drinking well now for many years to come." 94 Points - JZ January '18
"The most underrated wines in the entire Etude portfolio are their Cabernet Sauvignons. I had a chance to taste from the great 2013 vintage. They are all noteworthy achievements. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (like all of the others), shows a dense opaque purple color, notes of pen ink, blackberry, licorice, creosote and a long, full-bodied, heady mouthfeel. This is a much smaller production cuvée than usual because 46 barrels were destroyed in the earthquake in August 2014. This wine should drink well for 10-15 years."- Wine Advocate
"Bold, rich and assertive, with aromas of black cherry, dark berry, graphite, crushed rock and cedar. More sturdy than sophisticated at this point, but the finish is strong, supported by ripe, fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2028. 1,896 cases made."- Wine Spectator
"Etude's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is powerful, dense and concentrated, with plenty of black cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and French oak. Supple and inviting, the 2013 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is an especially dark, concentrated style. This is a big wine, not at all shy made in a deep, rich powerful style."- Vinous
Napa Valley, California
Etude’s 2013 Napa Cab tastes like success. Winemaker Jon Priest pulled out all the stops to ensure that the best harvest on season reflected in every succulent sip of his Cabernet. Rounded, vibrant, glorious juicy, it shows off the graham cracker spice, black raspberry, baking spice exuberance which put Napa on the map.
But this is no ordinary Napa Cab. Jon Priest is something of a holy man in Napa, one of the regions most sought-after winemakers. His deft touch with premium fruit inevitably leads to bottles of superior Cab. Fruit from Vine Hill Ranch in Oakville, Morisoli Vineyard in Rutherford, Meteor Vineyard in Coombsville, and Schoenstein Vineyard in St Helena was all deliberately and carefully selected for their finesse.
The valiant and triumphant effort in this bottle will take you back. If Napa Cab is your heart song and powerful beauty in a glass of glory is your homeland, then this is your ticket home.
Why we love it:
- Jon Priest is Napa’s go-to winemaking guru. He’s consulted with a slew of Napa’s most prestigious wineries. And Etude is Jon’s own expression. From vine to cellar to bottle, Etude is Jon’s ode to polished, seductive wine.
- Classicism at its best is a profound exaltation of traditional regional styles. Napa’s exquisite weather and breathtaking terrain make it Cabernet’s prime stomping ground. Rich, lushly textured, brimming with black fruits and espresso and exotic spices…it’s a call to home for those who live in the luxury of Napa Cab.
- Jon pulled from Napa’s top AVAs for this sublime blend. Coombsville, Rutherford, St Helena…each offered up its perfect fruit for Tony to practice his art.
- Everything stopped as the harvest in 2013 came to the usual slow grinding halt. As winemakers raised their heads from the dawn to dusk work of harvest and crush, the full magnitude of the season came to bear. It was a perfect vintage and the wines, stressed from drought and pulling through, gave Napa one of the most immaculate seasons on record.
Exuberant, rich and fruit-driven, the 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet is deep and juicy, with plenty of black cherry, black raspberry and blackberry. Mint, black licorice and graham cracker spice add nuance to the core of black fruit in this exceptionally elegant, complex wine. A great example of the exemplary vintage, this 2013 drinks well at this early stage, but is compactly structured with dense tannins to age gracefully over the next decade or so.
From the winery:
Etude was founded on the philosophy that winemaking begins in the vineyard long before the harvest and that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker, resulting in authentic varietal expression. This remains our approach today as we continue to build the Etude legacy.
At the winery, solar panels supply about a third of Etude’s energy needs, recycled water is used for landscape irrigation and employees manage a composting and recycling program which diverts a large percentage of waste away from landfills. The Etude team also takes pride in their employee cultivated garden, with a portion of the produce donated to the Napa Food Bank.
