There are plenty of wines that caress the palate with subtlety and the utmost finesse. These are, after all, what most wine writers extoll about, and what wine snobs love to discuss, collect, and occasionally even drink.

Love Hammer is not one of those, which is precisely what winemaker and SLO Down Wines owner Brandon Allen was going for when he concocted this sinfully simple 100% Cabernet. By sourcing fruit from small family farmers in Napa Valley and insisting on the most scrupulous viticulture possible, with 100% hand harvesting and equally exacting practices in the winery, Allen has turned what might have been another snooty, cerebral Cab into an almost erotic experience. Erupting with juicy blackberry and cherry pie filling aromas and flavors, this Cab unfolds on the tongue to reveal notes of milk chocolate, exotic spice and a touch of warm vanilla oak on the finish. At just under 15% abv, this big boy is best drunk with foods that are equally forthright like BBQ baby back ribs.

·       The 2015 vintage for Napa Cab was rated 97 points by the Wine Advocate and 95 points or “Superb” by the Wine Enthusiast.

·    Winemaker Brandon Allen made his first barrel of wine as a freshman in college at San Luis Obispo, CA, and has dedicated himself to oenology ever since.

·    Napa’s SLO Down Wines was established in 2008, with the first release being just 93 cases of Sexual Chocolate—an instant success.

·    Partial aging in new French and Hungarian oak barrels imparts a touch of sweet cedar and vanilla spice to this Napa Cabernet.

TASTING NOTES

From the winery:

The 2014 Love Hammer brings the complete spectrum of Cab flavors that one would expect from small, hand-harvested, meticulously farmed vineyards in Napa. Poweful fruit tannins are softened by an explosion of flavors of brambly blackberry and dark cherry. A subtle dash of new French and Hungarian oak barrels add structure as well as some notes of mocha, spice and tobacco. And unlike a passion that may grow cold in the light of dawn, the memory of this wine will linger and inspire many more affairs of the heart.
