Fluffy like a Fresh Pillow. The Meyer Family wasn't fooling when they named this wine. It is a luscious beaut, and I'm stoked we were able to get an allocation before everyone else. Dark berry aromas dominate the nose, leading into an elegant palate of cassis, blackberries and oak. Big body with an excellent balance of acids and fruit, it's drinking super well. This is definitely coming to my next function. 95 Points - JZ October '17
Oakville, Napa Valley, California
100% Cabernet Sauvignon
22 months; 50% new French oak, 50% neutral oak
1st Market Access - Released at Winery This Week
Whoa, this brand-spanking-new release from our favorite Cab producer is a stunner—with a doozy of an impact on the palate and all of the depth and elegance you’d expect from this cult producer, from a fantastic, super ripe vintage and from the heart of Napa’s tony Oakville AVA.
Exotic spice that speaks of the Far East meets wafting notes of forward and well defined fruit characters like blueberry, black currant and wild blackberry. So much fruit offered more than enough stuffing to match almost two years of maturation in French oak (half new, half neutral), and the finished product—while very young by Oakville Cabernet standards—is already irresistible for its fruit-basket and spice box aromas and flamboyant personality.
Members have flocked to previous Cab releases from vintner Matt Meyer (son of Bonny and Justin Meyer, the acclaimed founders of Silver Oak Cellars). Since its establishment in the early 1970s, Silver Oak has been one of the most sought-after labels on the market, and luckily for fans of Silver Oak, Matt is every bit as talented as his parents.
Reasons why we love it:
- While Matt gets center stage for his famous parents, his wife Karen Meyer deserves her very own spotlight. Karen cut her wine teeth in her native Australia, where she completed an oenology degree, and worked at Oregon’s Argyle winery where she first met Matt.
- Meyer’s Fluffy Billows is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from within the Oakville AVA. The juice was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel before being racked to oak barrels (50% new French barrique and 50% neutral) for a long 22 months of rest and relaxation.
Blackberry and ripe currant give way to ripe fig, anise, and a hint of licorice. Two years in oak have added pronounced layers of cardamom, cedar, tobacco, and a hint of cinnamon. This vineyard site
continually produces wines with a polished palate making them a joy to drink while still young. The 2014 is a standout vintage drinking well upon release but should improve substantially over the next decade.
From the winery:
Meyer Family Cellars is a small, family-owned winery situated in the picturesque Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino County. At once a leading artisanal winery in one of California’s emerging viticultural areas, Meyer Family Cellars blends establishing this new Appellation with the legacy of Silver Oak Cellars.
One of the state’s iconic wine brands, Meyer Family Cellars occupies a unique place in the story of California wine. It was established in 1987 by Silver Oak founders and former owners Justin and Bonny Meyer, who dreamt of a family wine brand that drew upon their extensive experience in the Napa and Alexander Valleys. Incorporated in the plan too was their son, Matt, a well-traveled student of wine and graduate of the enology and viticulture program at the University of California Davis.
Today Meyer Family Cellars is in the capable hands of co-winemakers Matt and Karen Meyer. Their approach to winemaking mirror the unique position of their product. While their wine incorporates “old world” balanced acidity and minerality with “new world” ripeness and forward fruit, similarly, Matt and Karen apply the wisdom gleaned from family history while welcoming new ideas into the process.
