James Suckling, 95 points
Beautiful blue fruit, spices and lightly toasted oak with hints of coffee. Medium to full body, fine and caressing tannins and a beautiful, transparent finish. Showing excellence now, but better after 2021.

WHY WE LOVE IT
  • BLEND
    Cabernet Sauvignon
  • APPELLATION
    Coombsville, Napa Valley
  • ALCOHOL
    14.90%
  • SIZE
    750ml

Hold on to your slippers because they’re about to go flying whilst you roll around on the floor squealing in delight for the chance to snag a few bottles of this magnanimous 95pt Cabernet Sauvignon. Only 6 barrels produced!! How we got any is a shock. How we got any to share at our price (44% off retail mind you) is why we love this business.

Coombsville is a relatively new AVA in Napa Valley (it was officially designated in 2011), but has been a source and backbone for several 90+pt wines over the years. Mondavi, Phelps, Sattui and Hobbs, to name a few, all source fruit from these volcanic and ash-rich soils. Since becoming an AVA, it is now one of the most sought-after and interesting sites for winemakers to play as its relatively cooler location in the southeast corner of Napa lends itself to produce wines that have a lively balance of fruit, acid and approachability.

Right you are Mr. Suckling, though this wine is drinking beautifully in 2020! Layered and rich notes of black currants, blueberries and kirsch are met with hints of rose petals, cigar box, chocolate and freshly roasted coffee. The palate is silky with velvety smooth tannins and nicely balanced fruit and spice leading to a delicious vanilla-chocolate infused finish.

Drink it now, save some for later. If you love Cabernet (and we know you do), it just doesn’t get better than this. And for $44% off?! $135 a 3-pack with shipping included?! There is no question. You NEED this magical wine in your life.

THE STORY TO KNOW

Martin Ray was a pioneer, dedicated to crafting single varietal, region specific wine from 1943 through 1972 in Saratoga, in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mentored by Paul Masson, he took a burgundian approach to his winemaking, and developed what is now one of the most historical properties in California, known as Mount Eden. Nearly twenty years later, Courtney Benham stumbled upon 1500 cases of Martin Ray wine in a San Jose warehouse. Courtney purchased the brand, and since 1990 has been committed to the production of artisanal wines worthy of the Martin Ray name. In 2003, Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery made its home in the Russian River Valley, on the edge of Green Valley at one of the oldest continually working wineries in California.
