Best of Class/Double Gold - Mendocino County Fair Wine Competition

Full flavored, well structured and well balanced, this is a handsome wine that carries its ample black-cherry and blackberry flavors on a muscular frame of fine-grained tannins and full body. The natural, concentrated grape flavors come shining through with little obvious oakiness to get in the way. -Wine Enthusiast

Charles Barra recognized the incredible terroir of Mendocino long before that northern county made it to the big leagues—in fact, even before Napa and Sonoma were turning heads on the worldwide wine scene. After a few years making garage-style wine from purchased fruit, Barra pounced on the opportunity to purchase Redwood Valley Vineyards in 1954, a 175-acre ranch planted to a range of wine grapes. And he never looked back.

Barra’s 2016 Cabernet shows off the killer 2016 vintage for Cabernet and the plusher, darkly fruited side of the grape, with notes of vanilla spice a touch of black licorice ending with fully integrated tannins and just the right dose of food-friendly acidity. This one was picked as an Editors’ Choice by the Wine Enthusiast, and also won a Best of Class/Double Gold at the Mendocino County Fair Wine Competition to boot.

·    The 2016 vintage was “Extraordinary” for North Coast Cabernet according to the Wine Advocate, earning a near-perfect 98 points.

·    Charlie Barra has been farming grapes since the mid 1940s, inheriting his love of viticulture from both his father, Antonio Barra, and his maternal grandfather, Giuseppe Rovera, who came to Mendocino from Piedmonte, Italy at the turn of last century.

·    This Cab’s wood spice-inflected character comes from aging in 20% new French oak (sourced from François Freres, Seguin Moreau and Canton coopers).

·    All of Barra’s vineyards are certified by the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) and have been for more than 20 years.

From the winery:

Displaying a beautiful ruby hue, this elegant Cabernet greets you with complex notes of vanilla, black currant, wood spice and anise.  On the palate, it is soft and plush, while at the same time delivering a wonderful, lively acidity. There is a mix of dark fruit and a subtle hint of dusty cocoa. Silky chocolate notes and soft, supple tannins round out the lingering finish.
