Parallel's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a fruit-driven, dense ruby/purple wine with loads of black cherry and blackberry fruit. The wine has a medium to full body, good tannin, a neutral mouthfeel and high quality. I don't know much about the winery, but this is classy Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 15-20 years. Rating: 91+ -Robert Parker

Rich, jammy nose of black cherry and blackberry nose. Full bodied, showing cassis, cranberry and pomegranate with oaky tannin and undertones of vanilla and eucalyptus. Parker rated this 3 years ago, and it has begun its evolution beautifully as predicted.

All mountain fruit, which in winemaking parlance makes for a Cabernet experience that differs drastically from the typical “valley floor” behemoths once the rage in wine circles. These days, it’s all about balance and elegance when it comes to California Cab, and this one from cult winemaker Philippe Melka is a prototypical example.

The incredibly high-quality fruit for this Cab was sourced by a who’s who of Napa’s top subregions including Howell Mountain and Atlas Peak. In the hands of Melka (consultant at Seavey, Quintessa and Vineyard 29), this Cab has become a seamlessly smooth and polished red with notes of anise, ripe raspberries and subtle tobacco. Drinking perfectly now, this will continue to blossom over at least the next five years.

Reasons why we love it:

Parallel is the love child and eight longtime friends—four couples dedicated to producing limited amounts of boutique wines from prime vineyards. And they are going on their second decade doing so!

Made by none other than Philippe Melka, the heart and mind behind several cult labels in California and a French native educated in Bordeaux (wine winemaking stints at Petrus and Haut Brion).

From the winemaker:

A savory character of smoked meat on the nose balanced with notes of Black Mission figs, cinnamon and thyme. Great acidity on the palate with flavors of wild cherry, cracked pepper, crushed dried herbs and black licorice. Sure to pair well with food.

In its first few years, Parallel Napa Valley has grown to be one of the most exciting new Napa mountainside wineries in California. Parallel Napa Valley wines are the result of a collaboration of eight close friends and two of the top winemaking professionals in the industry today: Philippe Melka, who was recently named the 2005 Winemaker of the Year by Food & Wine magazine, and highly acclaimed Vineyard Manager Jim Barbour of Barbour Vineyards. Philippe and Jim are responsible for crafting some of the most sought-after wines in Napa Valley. The inagural 2003 Parallel Cabernet Sauvignon marked the first time these masters had collaborated to create such an affordable wine. While this team continues to produce increasingly attractive vintages of Parallel, we have been able to maintain a very attractive price for Parallel Napa Valley.

Parallel is also the story of parallel lives and friendships that have unfolded over the past 30 years. That circle of friendship now encompasses two special places: the mountains of Park City, Utah, where the four couples developed their friendship, and the hillside vineyards of Napa Valley, where they now pursue their common dream. All successful entrepreneurs in their own right, the Parallel partners love a challenge and relish the chance to participate hands-on. As such, they have been fully involved in every aspect of creating Parallel, from the planting of the first vine to sampling the first sip of each new vintage. It's this energy and synergy that makes Parallel Wines so special.

Drink this Napa Cabernet as a wine of quiet contemplation or with beef and lamb.
