Bordeaux Biodynamic Tastes That Much Better
I had the pleasure of working in the vineyards of Bordeaux 7 years ago, on an organic vineyard nonetheless. Lemme tell ya, organic farmwork is a few steps harder than traditional farming. Biodynamic? It's a step further. The amount of work that goes into a wine like this is what makes it so special. When you've worked the vines throughout the season, you come to appreciate everything that's in that bottle. That's the feeling I got when I tried the Château Couronneau: appreciation.
Rich umami nose with red fruit, mushroom and sliced meats. Full bodied, showing fig, cassis, cranberry and fresh game, with good tannic structure and an oaky backbone. It gives tobacco and fruit through the finish. Ready to drink, a good everyday drinker. 91 Points - JZ Sept '18
Merlot, Bordeaux Blend
AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, France
Cultivated on a 16th Century wine estate using biodynamic methods, this Bordeaux expertly blends French tradition and modern innovation. Almost 100% merlot, Winemaker Christophe Piat has a handful of vintages under his belt and we must say: the expression of his wines of late are explosive! This Rouge is barrel aged for a creamy texture and sweet palate, full of ripe, black summer fruit.
· Bordeaux Supérieur AOC, Certified Organic in 2000 by Ecocert and Biodynamic in 2011 by Demeter.
· Vaunted by critics in France and the U.S., the estate’s Rouge has been highly rated by The Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator and featured on lists of today’s top Bordeauxs, from the Wall Street Journal to Le Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) and La Revue du Vin de France.
· Created by award-winning biodynamic winemaker and owner Christophe Piat, who breathed new life into the estate in 1994 and has focused his attentions on perfecting the winery’s four classic offerings, of which the elegant, full-bodied Rouge is the crown jewel.
· An outstanding value, already excellent out of the bottle, but will be in its peak drinking window over the next few years.
Ripe fruit, earthy flavors, and hints of pepper combine to make a sweet yet creamy texture.
From the winery:
Couronneau is a very old Bordeaux wine estate (15th century) of 35 ha of vineyards, which pursues the sole purpose of making very fine wines in accordance with the specifications of organic farming.
About the vineyard:
Located on the highest point of the department, 180 meters above sea level, on a clay-limestone soil with a steep slope, the vineyard of 38,33 hectares is composed for red, 35,33 hectares of Merlot , and for the white, of 3 hectares including 50% Sauvignon Gris and 50% Sauvignon Blanc .
Our density oscillates between 3500 and 6000 feet per hectare with an average greater than 5000.
A high trellising height for optimal photosynthesis , suckering at the head, the fall of counter-buds, manual leaf stripping and harvesting in green, are all works that allow us to strive for excellence.
We recommend trying this with a lean cut of beef, such as a sirloin or a round roast.
