92pts, James Suckling
This delivers a swathe of ripe dark berries and plums with a very plush, succulent palate that carries great depth and freshness. The length here is impressive. A blend of 80 per cent merlot, 15 percent cabernet franc and five per cent cabernet sauvignon. Try from 2022.

91pts, Vinous
The 2016 Hervé-Laroque has an elegant, focused bouquet of vivacious red currant and raspberry fruit laced with tobacco and humidor aromas. The focused palate is medium-bodied with slightly angular tannin and a fresh bead of acidity. The structured finish implies at least a decade’s worth of drinking pleasure. Excellent.

Let us introduce you to our friend of 92pt sub-$20 Bordeaux, the Château Hervé-Laroque Fronsac Rouge. It’s quite a feat to comb through the tens of thousands of wines to find one like this. One that offers so much for its oh so humble price tag, and from a spectacular vintage too! We love 2016 Bordeaux, it’s all the rage at our offices and it just wouldn’t be right if we didn’t share it with you.

The wine is an absolutely solid showings of what Fronsac can deliver. Fronsac, being on the northerly end of the right bank, is known for its powerful, complex wines with a lovely body and notes of red berries, pepper and spice. It’s a great source for consistently good Merlot-based Bordeauxs that aren’t always mind-bending, but are solid and just delicious.

THE STORY TO KNOW

The estate is composed by a bit more than 42 acres (16 ha) which are located on both the hillsides of the wonderful terroir of Saillans and on the top of the highest plateaus of Fronsac. The wines are made of four grapes varieties which lead to the following blend: 65 % Merlot, 20 % Cabernet Franc, 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon and, 5 % of +100 year-old-Malbec. The soils are clay and limestone and the very specific alkaline pH is ideal to enable a production of top-quality Bordeaux Grands Vins.

The oldest bottles labeled Chateau Moulin Haut Laroque date from the vintage 1890, and the Herve’s family still owns a few bottles! Chateau Hervé-Laroque, the second wine of the estate, is made from the same grapes and care but offers a different and more accessible expression of the terroir.
